Am I happy to see this thread. I too was surprised as anything to get this letter through the door.
200,000 fines and no one noticed. I can't get my head around how no one at HMRC thought it a bit out of the ordinary. "Hey, Bob this mail sacks a bit heavy today"
I too am surprised at this cockup not getting media coverage. If it wasn't for PH I'd have had a very stressful evening as would anyone unlucky enough to come into contact with me.
And I guess it'll be a case of having to prove they've got it wrong. If just 5% pay the fine that's £9m extra in the coffers!

I'm not celebrating as I'm still unclear whether or not mine is unjustified, however, teh letter has been written asking them where the P35 and the subsequent warning and reminders were sent as they were not received at my address.
The irony of course being, how can I argue with whatever they say when there's no proof either way, other than I'm not the kind of dumbshit who ignores warning letters or the 1st letter that comes through going, you owe us £100/200 and lets it escalate.

My accountant phoned the Revenue last week after we received one of these penalty notices for £900. We also never received a P35. His argument was that they should at least inform people after 1 month, not leave it for 9 months, but was told they don't do that......I wonder why????!!!!
That being said, I received a letter from the Revenue 2 days later saying that no penalty was due. Hope this news is a bit encouraging to the rest of you poor guys who received the penalty notice
