Registering website with online directories

I've read in a few places that by registering a website with online directories (and creating links) you gain a higher placing in natural search engine results. How effective is this? Is it worth paying one of the companies that offer to register you with 1000 sites for £x worth it?

Would really appreciate any help / advice. BTW my website is www.dirtdirect.co.uk (does that count as a link?!)

As your website is not hosted in the UK (USA on Sprint reseller of a reseller by the look of it) then your website will already be at a large disadvantage as it will not be picked up by google UK, rather google USA, so anyone searching for UK only sites will not get your site.

If you're serious about SEO, you should look to rectifying this asap.
