Subway or other Franchise
Discussion
Hi guys,
Bit of a random question this I know, but I've been considering some new business opportunities, and have come across numerous great reports on the Subway franchise (franchise of the year god knows how many times), along with a few others.
I'm awaiting some information on a few in the post, but after lots of googling can't actually find any figures on potential earnings, profit & loss forecasts etc.
I've found plenty of info on start up costs, licence fees etc, but nothing on average profit on an outlet.
Has anyone come across figures like this on Subway for example?
If anyone has any good links to this sort of info, or knows the figures, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.
Paul.

Anyone considering ANY kind of Franchise needs to look long and hard, read the small print and always ask yourself what's in it for ME......
Of course not all franchises are bad, but a good number are, remember the old addage "A fool and his money are soon parted"............
Personally I think Subways are just glorified butty shops, why not go it alone?????

I'm not a huge fan myself, but i think the brand is spreading rapidly, about a year or two ago I barely knew who they were, now I think the brand is getting as big as Mcdonalds etc in the UK.Of course not all franchises are bad, but a good number are, remember the old addage "A fool and his money are soon parted"............

I haven't got the knowledge or time to go it alone to be honest, and I've seen so many sandwhich shops close down I was thinking a big brand may be the way forward.
I may be kidding myself, but I was looking for something that wouldn't take up much of my time as I have other commitments, but instead could employ shop manager etc to manage day to day running in return for a reasonable profit, and possibly open up a few.

A colleague of mine spent a long time looking at a Subway franchise. Things are very tight margin wise and I believe each customer had to spend about £2.70 just to break even.
Thats the kind of info i'd like to get my hands on, have to wait and see what arrives in the post.I'll tell you a funny story about Subway.........
About three years ago, I was in Malta (St Julians) and was looking for a brokers to exchange some currency...
I was told by a policeman "Oh It's up that street next to the subway"........
Well, I'm not joking, I spent over half an hour going up and down the street looking for a Subway (underpass), before I realised what he meant, as I had never heard of the chain before....

I'd have been doing exactly the same thing....

Can't give any detailed help - just thought I'd mention that Bedford has a Subway and they have a 'person' dressed up as a sandwich with a signpost pointing to the outlet. It's such a lousy costume that I wouldn't go to a Subway just on the basis that they obviously enjoy humiliating their staff

How can £2.70 be the breakeven point for all Subways? Breakeven being the point where contribution (profit on variable expenses) covers fixed costs. Fixed costs will be very different in London compared to Burnley. Additionally different products will have different margins. For example I suspect there is more profit in the sandwiches than the crisps. That said isn't it quite difficult to spend less than £2.70 in Subway? I thought that there sandwiches were around the £3 mark?
