So, am just about to attempt my 2nd tax return, and this year they have sent me a short return.

However, unlike last year (I think?) it asks for my turnover.

To complicate things, I undertake a number of things - I do mystery shopping for a number of companies, and also am a representative for Usborne Books.

With the Mystery Shopping, I generally get paid a set amount for a call, wheras the books are commission based.

So, do I put in my sales for usborne added to what I have received for mystery shopping to give my turnover?

(hope that makes sense, I am sleep deprived, and the wrong side of a bottle of red biggrin)

Can't help you, but for the seventh consecutive year of being in business the HMRC have spectacularly failed to send me a return. Unfortunately, I'm not brave (or stupid) enough to attempt getting away without filling one in...

Good luck and I wish I'd gone for the whole bottle rather than just half. smile

It sounds like a "Short" return is inappropriate for you. Even though the Revenue have sent you a Short Form, if you try to complete it and send it to them when it is not the right type of form for you, YOU will be held to have failed to complete a correct return.

Probably the best thing for you to do is either:

a) get chatting to a friendly accountant who will sort out what you need to do

b) have a go at filing an on-line return.

"On-Line" returns are legally the same as a Full Self Assessment tax return. It is impossible to complete a "Short" return on line.
