from experience, the Coutts actually has more power than the AMEX Black now..

Mates couldn't queue jump the sandersons Purple Bar with the Black, but the Coutts meant straight in, AND a table...
I can't help wondering how much of a massive penis you need to be to start waving a credit card around to jump a queue into a bar?! smile
You'd prefer just not to get in?

Yes! A bar full of utter bell-ends does not really appeal. No offence like. smile

smile so then you wouldn't be in the queue to see anyone waving it around to be offended by it in the first place, so no issue wink

Technically true, but that's not really the point is it.

Do people actually do that? I mean for real, not internet-for real.

So what's the protocol? Does one stroll up to the front of the queue, casually take the doorman aside and flash him your Centurion/Coutts card for immediate entrance?

I can imagine this is either a) the route to all that's good in trendy bars full of s or b) an invitation for a punch in the face.

Neither appeals, to be honest.

smile Each to their own..

Personally, I just do do queueing... It's so much easier to just walk up and get ushered inside... but I use relationships for this, not plastic..

It's a big wide world, full of many different types, styles and flavours... accepting that others may like / want things we dont is part of being nice wink

Anyway, we've drifted now.

Plastic is good.. but being on first name terms with the Door staff / Management is always preferable.

Plastic doesn't let you bypass closing time, and there are events were even the plastic isn't always useful (ie West End clubs on a busy night, every trader and their secretary/gf has one!)

Obviously plastic really comes in to it's own when you're out of your manor as personal relationships rarely stretch this far.

Fundamentally they're a bank, like any other. Having a PB is useful when they foul up (and you get lunch and other treats from time to time). Having a UK call centre staffed by proper bankers (Coutts 24) is gold-dust.

The World Card concierge service (contracted out to Ten UK) is improving gradually, and is far more personal than the Centurion (Amex black) service ever was. Compared to Amex, though, they are nowhere as a travel agent (I think Amex may still be the world's largest travel agent). If you travel a lot, or want to get shallow VIP treatment, stick with the Centurion - no-one has *ever* recognised the purple card or reacted to it, anywhere. I stopped caring and couldn't justify the fees (£650) for the Amex, so switched to the Coutts card, where you get the fees back if you spend more than £50k pa.

I'm currently with Handelsbanken.

The branch you sign up to is the branch in your postcode area. Any problems you call the branch and speak to someone at that branch!

Very good so far - the only downside is the internet banking is pretty dated.

Quite fancy a Coutts account but don't meet the requirements!

Odd that, my parents banked with Coutts for many years, they actually moved to Handelsbanken from Coutts.

Coutts investments aren't brilliant, and the investment team will tell you as much. (obviously not on work time, but it had been said at private functions before)

Coutts world card economics are similar to Amex Black card -- if you have a big family that does lots of travelling (especially lots of sport) then the insurance cover basically pays for the card

If you are a single guy then the £600 fee gets you nothing you cant get elsewhere for far less
You don't pay the World Card fee if you spend enough on the card. Amex makes you pay the Centurion fee however much you spend.

Since the massive fee hike last year, Centurion concierge has gone back to the level it was at when the cards were first issued in 1998. The Coutts concierge just isn't as switched on - they came up with an estimate of nearly twice as much for the same holiday last year as Amex. Amex seems to have better access to restaurant tables too.

The bank is very good though. Just pick up the phone, speak to somebody who knows you and they do things for you there and then. Much like the service I used to get from Barclays before they introduced their stty Premier Banking in the 90s.
