Apple iMac network card problem

The ethernet card has given up on our imac. I also have a G3 at home with an ethernet card in built in - can I just remove that one and put it in the imac?

Anyone know if it's a differnet size etc?

Any help appreciated ...

I thought that it was part of the motherboard?

The computer works fine except for our ntl connection fo the internet which is via this Ethernet card.

Wired my old G3 up - not a problem. So the cable etc is OK.

If it's part of the motherboard then it's £££££ isn't it????

You can sometimes get whole new M/B from iMacs that have fried the crt (now that is expensive), not sure where to start though.

Are you sure, that some software hasn't been corrupted?

Check in the System profile to see if it thinks it is there. I assume you have checked the settings, as I have managed to accidently change a setting and broken the network.

You can get USB modems, but not sure how that would work. Also try at www.macassist.co.uk, the forum there is very good.

Edit: will link the imac up to the G3 thru the ethernet port to see if they're talking to each other via file sharing and see if the port in the imac is working ...

If you have a hub, you should be able to see a 'connection' light on it, although if the card is disabled, it might not show. If you are doing direct mac-mac, bon't forget you need a cross-over cable.

Do iMacs have any PCI slots in them? If so, and you've a spare slot, just buy a compatible PCI ethernet card and slam it in. Much cheaper than a motherboard repair I'd bet.

Unfortunately not Marshy.

The early ones had a proprietary (sp?) slot, but newer ones just have usb & firewire, so in theory no need for pci slots.

I think MikeyT has it sorted now.
