MoonPig Results Dont Make Sense

<b>Moonpig more than double its turnover to £20.9m for the year ending 30 April 2009.

£7.9m in sales recorded in the 12 months previous.

Pre-tax profits for the latest period also more than doubled from £2.5m to £6.7m.

During the 12 months to 2009, the company shipped 5.8m cards with a record of 99,000 sent on one day in February.

Ok 2.5m customers, lets say 3m customers, t/o £21m means each customer spends £7 a card and they make £2.40 profit on each card

Do people really spend £7 on a card ?

You're assuming that each person only buys one card a year. They probably buy a few.

As said, if people buy cards from Moonpig, they probably buy all the cards needed in a year, this can be quite a few!

Moonpig do the flowers, and no, she's grateful. As for "proper card" I think you'll find a card with your wedding photo and a verse typed by the person you love means a little more than going out & buying some generic st. Everyone’s happy

They do! 5.8m cards shipped by 2.5m people. £3.60 per card sounds about right.

I didn't realise Moonpig let you customise like that, that's pretty good. I tend to get cards from 'nice' card shops rather than your Clinton's/Birthdays etc.

I'm not sure if I understand what you're getting at.

You asked if people are spending £7 / card. I said the figures seemed to suggest the average is more like £3.60 / card.

Just had a look at the website and got this price list.

Standard Card £2.99
Large Card £5.99
Square Cards £1.99
Postcards 8 for £6 (mimimum quantity of 8)
Small Cards 4 for £6 (mimimum quantity of 4)

So I guess an average around £3.60 could be reasonable, depending on proportions of different sizes sold. Assuming they sold the number of cards stated then the turnover sounds ok?

Even i was impressed with the results. The flowers add on is very crafty & clever way of extracting yet more £££ from you. Good luck to them i say.

got one from my sister, think she was in new zealand at the time, bit of a no brainer, couple of clicks and card gets posted locally and guaranteed to arrive

I met the 2 guys who set moonpig up at a print show in 2000 - they spent £500,000 on 2 machines to print them when they first set up - at the time I thought it would crash and burn but .....I use them all the time now

Each card is approx £5 - £7 - compare that to going and buying one ...
you go online pick a card and they post it - all nicely peronalised, interesting that the people I sent them too now also use them ...

Your average card in the shops is £1.50
Plus transport
Time
Hassle
Posting etc

I use MoonPig and they encourage repeat business - if you pre-pay your account by £20 they credit you with £25, which you then have to spend. We use it due to the difficulty of finding "granny" and "nanny" cards without visiting 74 different card shops.
