The OSX/Apple support thread
Discussion
My dad has been complaining that his 2013 MacBook Pro has been getting slower and slower over the last couple of years, to which I shamefully did very little about apart from flippantly telling him to 'buy a new one'.
He has now given it to me to look at, and holy crap... It's unusable.
It takes around 10 minutes to boot up, and then another 15-20 minutes for the handful of desktop icons or even the cursor to start appearing.
If you click on anything like an application or folder, it takes around 15 mins to open it. Essentially every time you use the curser to click on anything, there is a 10 minute delay until it does it.
He has never used it for any hard work, just his emails, browsing, and a few Word docs. I checked the hard drive and it is almost empty apart from the OSX. He has about 10Gb of photos and reasonably important documents on there.
No idea how it has ended up like this, I can only assume something has become corrupt?
I need to wipe it completely and start again to see if that fixes the issue, but the problem is, it is so unresponsive and slow I can't even manage to drag his documents and photos off the desktop folder they are in and onto a memory stick.
Any ideas on what I can do?

Anyone else have poor call volume / quality etc with their iphone 12 or 13 connecting to their car? (Bluetooth). Missus keeps complaining and there are other reports online too. She’s just swapped back to iPhone 8 and it is back to normal. Bloody annoying as nothing specific. My 11 pro seems ok.

Nope. I have a 13 Pro and the call quality is excellent through the car.I am not techie, but do the newer iPhones have an upgraded version of bluetooth and is your car better on an older version? Complete guess and probably total nonsense!
Thanks. Yeah it’s an 09 Bmw mini, so older tech in the car. But there are a number of posts from users who have trouble only with iPhone 12 & 13 and car connectivity. Problem is if I upgrade to a 13 (from a 12 pro max) it might still have the same issue! And I’ll be gutted. Or I could trade the 12 in and get a new 11 pro which they still sell, just it seems a bit backwards. Annoying.

Check if there is a Bluetooth update available for the car. You at a trying to use a Bluetooth 2.1 unit with a Bluetooth 5 phone Lord Marylebone said:

If it's a HDD model, and it's been upgraded to one of the more recent OSes, then that's why.He has now given it to me to look at, and holy crap... It's unusable.

The newer OSes were built for speedy SSDs, and it looks like Apple got lazy in optimising it, as they assumed everyone had a super-speedy SSD and wouldn't notice a bit of crap optimisations.
If it is a HDD, then your 2 options are 1) swap the internal HDD for a speedy SSD (use somewhere like Crucial to see what's compatible, and iFixit for the walkthrough); or 2) buy an external USB-connected SSD and install a completely clean version of the OS onto that...then migrate the stuff you need.
BTW, how much space is left?

Worth checking but do you use Zoom on the phone? I have this weird issue on my iMac where if I use zoom, but don't fully close the application after, the audio quality through my bluetooth headphones is terrible like a low bitrate. Say for instance I use Spotify, it's all crackly.
I have to force quit zoom, unpair and pair the headphones and it will kinda of click back to normal. I don't know if the phone might have the same issue.

Writing this on an early 2013 MBP. It is still fast and a pleasure to use,My guesses:
- Virus .. check with malwarebytes
- Disk full
- The SSD is dying. It's an easy replacement. Though expensive enough on the early 2013 model to make looking at a new machine an option.
Does activity monitor show any processes going wild?
Obviously copy his files before doing anything

Ah thanks yes she does use zoom on the phone for work meetings etc. Possible she still has it open in the background, I will suggest she makes sure it’s swiped closed.I have this weird issue on my iMac where if I use zoom, but don't fully close the application after, the audio quality through my bluetooth headphones is terrible like a low bitrate. I've just migrated away from safari on mac (and iphone/ipad so I can sync) due to an irritating feature/bug since Monterey was introduced...
I open the sidebar and select bookmarks (and then select the required folder/bookmark), then when I close the sidebar and reopen it, it returns to its root, meaning I then have to click through the folders to get back to where I was. It never used to do this, and I find it really annoying. There was a similar issue with iOS 15 but they seemed to have fixed it, but not on the Mac. There is a thread on Macrumors about it, so I'm not the only one.
Apart from Chrome, are there any other recommended browsers for Mac/iOS?

- Brave (I use this for PH and any other forum where I need to block excessive advertising crap)
- Firefox (for a couple of websites/forums that are a bit janky with the others)
- Microsoft Edge
- Waterfox
- Opera
- Vivaldi
