Hi all,

i've just bought an airport extreme. my network has a net gear dg834 router/modem. i have deactivated the wifi on the net gear using it just as a modem and connected via ethernet cable to the WAN of my airport extreme and enabled wifi on the airport.

keeping DHCP on the net gear and everything works.

however, i want to have the airport extreme as the brains of the network and the net gear as just a dumb modem. when i deactivate DHCP on the net gear and activate it on the airport my network gets buggerred up. i can still access all the computers and NASs on the network but i cannot access the interweb.

after much fiddling i've switched it back now so the airport extreme is just in bridge mode and providing the wifi, and the net gear still runs the show with DHCP etc.

i've trawled the interweb but cannot find a solution to this. i was wondering if any of you bright chaps might know the answer?

thanks

It sounds as though you're not specifying a default gateway (or default route) in your (new) DHCP configuration.

The internal IP address of the Netgear should be set as the default gateway / route for all internal devices.

There should be an entry for this on your DHCP server.

I suspect the Airport device is giving itself as the default gateway, which won't work.

a bit over my head. how does one find out the internal ip address of the net gear router and how does one add that information to the airport extreme?

The internal ip address is the one that was probably what the default gateway was when you had the old router as the DHCP server.

So you'll need to re-enable it, see what the default gateway is, and use that in the Airport Extreme.
