I recall a few pages back someone was asking for a decent search light:
Taclight have the Olight Intimidator in their winter sale, this is proper professional grade kit
SALE // OLIGHT SR95 INTIMIDATOR SEARCHLIGHT
The Olight SR95 Intimidator is an awesome searchlight, which outputs a high of 2000 lumens over an incredible range of 1000m. With an updated design, the SR95 handles heat dissipation more efficiently and is lighter. It has also been upgraded with a rechargeable lithium battery pack, which improves runtime and usability.
Was: £314.95 / NOW: £251.95

Nope.
The PD35 is my favorite compact EDC... great stuff. Please report back on the head torch!
Ok... So my parcel arrived at work today The PD35 is my favorite compact EDC... great stuff. Please report back on the head torch!
and I got the batteries on charge straight away.. First thoughts - these 18650 batteries take some time to charge! Roughly took 7 hours to charge the 2 batteries up.
The PD35 - nice weight to it and pretty easy to switch between all the modes.
Outstanding difference between this and the Mag-light!
Mag-light:
PD35:
Comes with a couple of CR123A batteries which I'll wrap up in some waterproofing and store in my walking bag as some emergency spares.
The H600 - way smaller than I was expecting,
but sure packs a punch for it's size!
Petzl Tikka Xp2:
Zebralight H600 MK II
Just a little bigger than an 18650 battery and has a nice weight to it.
Changing between modes is a little more difficult than the PD35, but allows for more customization. This gets HOT...
I'm definitely happy with my purchases and service provided from http://www.fenixtorch.co.uk/
Cheers for the good advice!

Top man, thanks for the thorough update.
May I ask if you could elaborate briefly on the difficulty in changing modes?, also I assume the heat isn't uncomfortable on the head?
(Will be adding one soon! )
Single click gives you full power, two single clicks gives you medium power, three single clicks gives you strobe.
Holding down the on switch cycles through high, medium and low.
When on a mode, double clicking changes the intensity of the light.
Single click at any time to turn the light off.
Strobe mode has 4 different speeds/brightnesses.
6 double clicks on low, medium or high activates programming mode which allows you to change the brightness of the 2nd level within each mode.
I'm sat here like a loon with the torch strapped to my head on full power, allowing it to heat up. So far it's not uncomfortable, but you can definitely feel it warming your skin. I can bear 5-10 seconds of holding the heatsink on the top.
I would say go for it!!

If you do take that Zebralight anywhere rural or remote would you mind posting some shots of it in use? There is absolutely nothing wrong with my H7.2 for wild camping and mountain use, it has performed brilliantly. And yet I keep getting drawn inexorably closer to clicking 'Buy' on that Zebralight...

Yep not a problem! Went a recce on my rural run route on the way home tonight but there was too much snow to even think about going a run!defblade said:
Doesn't say they're protected, so they're probably not. Charger not likely to be the best thing ever, either. I'd thoroughly recommend getting set up with 18650s, but only buy protected cells and get a decent charger with reviews from people who've bothered to check the charging currents applied and that they go into trickle properly. Once you've got a few 18650s, you'll wonder why you ever bothered with anything else; the voltage gives better output in all torches that will takes them and they last ages between charges.
I bought the setup linked with the charger/battery combo, the charger let the magic smoke out after about z5minutes of charging. After taking it apart it looks like a cap blew. Kind of glad I didn't leave it alone!
In short I'd avoid using it if you bought one.
The torch is amazing for the price though.
Chaps,
I bought one of these from Amazon after it was recommended on here:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/CREE-Lumens-Flashlight-Zoo...
And it has fallen apart. I suspect the problem is a one-off as it was otherwise OK. (And the other one I bought for Mrs zcacogp is still going fine). However I need a replacement, so what do the flashlight-cognoscenti on here suggest? It's to be a keyring torch, often carried in a pocket, so it needs to be small and lightweight and doesn't need searchlight-type light outputs. I'd buy another one of the things linked to above but they are a little bulky for carrying in a pocket. I'm guessing it will run on a single AAA battery.
All suggestions welcome, thanks.
Oli.

Okay, a different response, and I'll add the caveat that if you've got something with you - even something inherently lawful to carry - to cause harm to another person (yes, that includes 'self defence,') then it's an offensive weapon under UK law. There's a difference between using something that you just happen to be carrying for perfectly reasonable purposes in self defence, and carrying something specifically for the purpose of self defence.
Now that's said, two things: what made Maglites popular for the security conscious dog walker was their weight. So if you want something to deal with aggressive swans etc then you'll want something heavy - which realistically puts you back into C or D cell territory. Either scour DX or just get a suitably sized Maglite and chuck in a TerraLUX drop in, I gather they're pretty good for what they are. Just don't expect stellar results lighting wise.
Personally I'd refer you back to my first post though - all joking aside. Big heavy torches feel reassuring wandering around at night when bad people are about, but that feeling is almost entirely illusory.

The LED Lenser P17.2 takes 3 D cells and weighs 772g http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenser-LED9417-P17-2-Torch...
Will be my next purchase to replace a very sorry looking (compared to my latest P7.2) Maglite

And some other shots from my run.
As I said..pictures don't do it justice.
