The best small 18650 torch is the Zebralight SC600 IMO.
£90? eek So it should be! You can buy 5 of the BLF A6 for that price.
£90!!

5 for £90 equals, um, er, hang on, yes £18!

Howzabout one of these for um, a lot less than £18

I had a zebralight I really liked but it kept having faults. Can’t use it, so would never buy another. Ie the switching stopped working. Sometime it would come on, sometime not, sometimes couldn’t change modes etc. I think the circuitry not up to the he job.

Wasn't one of the early mk3 (I think) 600s was it? They changed the switches for a while and they were a bit crap.

I've had a couple of them in various guises and really rate them. It's unusual for me not to grab the SC52 if I need a torch. Had an SC5 but prefer the slimmer design of the 52.

It was an sc50. I took a vid at the time to show some issues

https://youtu.be/VDJOJYg_BuA

I also had another one with the head at 90 degrees (can’t remember model) and it too failed through normal use.

Shame you had problems. I'm a big zebralight fan, I have 3 and they have been perfect. Love the UI and their use of just an AA battery

I have no affiliation.

I've been after a S1R for a while now so just ordered one, thanks for that.

Oh blimey. Be rude not to get a new torch to celebrate the Royal Wedding.

And that is exactly what I shall be replying when I hear the words 'another bloody torch!'

Have you got a link? Despite still being off sick, I’m lazy as cook so thought I’d ask befor I have to go through all the “effort” of Googling!

Found the site...

I’m sure this has already been asked, but if I was aiming to spend about £50, what would be the torch/batteries of choice?

Ideally I’d like something rechargeable, and I’m confused by all the “18650” references. I want something that has an adjustable beam, but distance would be better than floodlight coverage.

As above, links would be great, for torch, batteries and charger. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if you were thinking of Olight in particular, but I've bought a lot of my stuff from Banggood in the past. There are a lot of people on this forum that are a lot more knowledgeable than me, but here's what I quickly pieced together for £50 ish.

A Convoy C8. This is a more focused, throwy light than you might want, but I've always found that there was plenty of light around the main spot of the beam to work with. It isn't a single, fixed, laser-like spot of light. If you want more of a flood style light, the Convoy S2+ is another great light.

https://www.banggood.com/Convoy-Clear-C8-XP-L-HI-7...

Some NCR 18650B Protected batteries. These are good quality, reliable cells. I'm not sure about the risk of fakes, but I've bought mine from Banggood in the past and they were legit.

https://www.banggood.com/4PCS-NCR18650B-3_7V-3400m...

And then a Nitecore i2 Charger. Fairly standard bit of kit. cheap and cheerful.

https://www.banggood.com/Nitecore-Intellicharger-N...

As I said, there are lots of people on this forum that know more than me, but I think you wouldn't go far wrong with that torch and those accessories.

Many thanks for the speedy, comprehensive reply and the links.

Is Banggood like eBay, or just an online shop like amazon? I’ve only ever heard of it in this thread (I haven’t read all sixty plus pages), but I’ve never looked at the site.

Just in case anyone has a bit of cash burning a hole in their pocket - Nitecore TM06 is down to £140 at Torch Direct

https://www.torchdirect.co.uk/searchlight-torches/...

No affiliation with them - just found them to be very good

FWIW, the TM06 is an epic little torch - would be nice to have a bit more throw, but I guess I can find another torch for that (wifey already thinks I'm nutty having half a dozen torches in the cupboard....)

The S1R is what you want. Save yourself 20 quid.

I need to stay out of this thread, it sucks up too much of my time.

Dibble - unless you're desperate for flood to throw adjustment, look at something with a fixed beam but with a pattern that will do what you want. Zoomies are often the worst of both worlds. The Convoy C8 is a throwy little light (get one with the XPL-HI in it) but has some spill so you can see where you're going.
If you're dead set on one have a look at the Brinyte B158.

Charger wise, Nitecore are overpriced. The Xtar VC2 is better for less money usually, but really the Liitokala Lii 202 is amazing value - I think mine cost me about £3 for a smart charger. Less bells and whistles but actually more functionality as it does LiFePO4 batteries too (alright, that's a bit niche but still - useful sometimes.)

TM06S vs. BLF Q8 - I suspect there's less in it than most would think. Curious to see if anyone owns both - I've got the Q8 and it's a monster, and is less than 1/3 of the price of the Nitecore.
I'd almost never buy from a UK stockist anyway as it's almost always cheaper through BG/GB etc, especially with deal codes through BLF etc. We're totally ripped off for torches in this country by the likes of TorchDirect/Flasholics etc.

I guess you could say it's like Amazon Marketplace or Ebay in some ways, some people have had bad experiences with it even though it's always been good to me.

If you wanted to be more certain of what you were getting, you could get the torch from the manufacturer's shop on AliExpress (yes, yet another random Chinese place biggrin ) with this link:

https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Convoy-c8...

Okay, this is another Chinese link, but it's the recommended place to buy Convoy torches as far as I know, I don't think there is a more direct or legitimate way to get them. I've ordered from that place numerous times with no hassle at all.

When you're buying batteries you'll have a choice between 'protected' and 'unprotected'. I buy protected cells because I am under the impression that these give me some level of er... protection (obviously) when it comes to charging and discharging rates. I.e. If I put these things in a cheap, st torch they're less likely to catch fire. That's my (very basic) understanding of it anyway.

There are a few places you can get the batteries themselves from, but a lot of it is just common sense, buy from places with good reviews and if the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Good brands as far as I know are LG, Samsung, Nitecore, EagleTac and Panasonic. I use the Panasonic cells I linked just because I know they're suitable from a previous recommendation.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00NNEHL8E/ref...

I've bought these too, again, legitimate cells in my experience.

You can get the charger from Nitecore themselves here:

https://www.nitecore.co.uk/Shop/Products/Chargers/...

So yeah, tl;dr I would be comfortable buying from Banggood, Gearbest or AliExpress but if you're not, there are other places to get chargers and batteries from.

The Olight S2R is on an Amazon lightning deal today (I've got prime and it says 30mins early access for prime, so you might want to leave it 20 minutes)

The lightning deal is about £9 knocked of the price however a 25% off voucher for Olight torches is also in effect.

I only went part way through checkout to confirm the price but then "accidentally" caught the buy button. Do I really need 3 different Olight torches?
