I've just ordered a couple of slightly different lights - I've been good so far, but I need some red lights for preserving night vision. So I've ordered an Ultrafire W549 COB type light - it looks weird but it's cheap, so I'm game to give it a go:

I've been really surprised by this light. It's throwaway money and I mainly wanted the red light, but since it tailstands on my desk I've found myself reaching for it a lot for round the house jobs. Magnetic tailcap is always a good thing, and the COB light (which can be rotated through about 270 degrees vertically) is really useful for closer work. In the past I'd use a headtorch for the same sorts of jobs but it's less faff to pop the W549 on the side/metal surface and crack on.
I've not used the secondary (more traditional, reflector type) light as much but that has a pleasant broad, even beam pattern with no artifacts. You're not going to light up fields with it but for walking to the shed it's fine.
I'm probably more impressed because I didn't expect anything of it, but I'd definitely recommend it - it's surprisingly handy.

Really like that, but why oh why would they design something like that and not put a USB out port so it can also be used as a battery bank, then you have something that's useful wherever you go.Ilovejapcrap said:

I bought these - thought they'd be useful for the churn of AAs around the house: doorbell, mouse, keyboard etc.
The package says that - stored - they lose only 10% over a year and 70% over ten years.
For me, they're dropping 40% in 1-2 weeks when stored, and are only lasting a week in the doorbell.
Freak batch? Or recommend me some good quality rechargeable AAs please.

I've always used Vapex LSD batteries - they seem fine and are fairly cheap.https://www.vapextech.co.uk/
If you fancy dipping a toe in the Olight world there is a great offer today.

I've become quite a fan of the Olight range and this represents good value. Its not their usual system with charging through the end cap, but frankly, that's not too much of a hardship. Got some nice 18650's that will fit and several rechargable Cr123's.

I don't think my charger accepts CR123A batteries (just had a look at the handbook and it doesn't mention them)
Can you recommend a source of reliable 18650s?
Thanks
