Thanks Zadkiel and Red_SLR. Suggests sent to the SIL who's chosen the Petzl Tactikka Core. Although I really like the Nitecore HC65 so might add that to my Christmas shopping list smile
I find head torches with a third band over the top of the head much more stable.

Tactikka Core seems to be the stealth ninja version of the regular Actik Core, with added £££.

I've had a couple of Petzl Tikkas and the build quality of the newer ones feel a little flimsy. Really not sure that IPX4 weatherproof is enough on a boat...

Morning my torch lovers.

Due to some work I'll likely be doing that may involve going into empty buildings in the middle of nowhere. I was looking at getting a 4 or 5 d cell Maglight. But their lumen output is terrible.

I've seen the below which puts out 600 lm. Is this particularly bright? Would a Maglight with one of the 1000lm upgrades be much better at twice the price? Or is there another alternative I've not found. Preferably that is well under £100.
Thanks

In terms of light output I'm not sure you'd immediately tell the difference between 600 and 1000lm, they're both very bright. Being able to drop the light output would be useful as 600lm is a bit much for up close work, the torch you linked says it has three modes.

Standard PH MX-5 style answer is Convoy L6

Large, hefty wink but not so much to be a pain, veritable wall of light, rechargeable but need to buy 2 * 26650 batteries and charger if you don't already have, well built.

Other suppliers, incl Amazon, though prices there are ridiculous. Gearbest as linked or Banggood are reliable suppliers, have used them.

However others will be along with other recommendations if you are particularly set on using disposable D cells. Once you've set yourself up for LED plus Li-ion won't go back ime.

A question for you most knowledgable gents. My sister-in-law is taking part in the Clipper Round the World race (legs 5 onwards) and has asked my advice on a good head torch.

I thought I'd ask a question here. But my search criteria is:

- really, really waterproof
- must have a red light
- batteries much preferable as recharging is the single biggest argument point on any boat
- Lightweight
- Main lens element shouldn't protrude much
- It will have to deal with really cold and really warm temperatures

Link for Clipper if you're interested: https://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/
That nitecore head torch recommended by others looks impressive.
If she goes overboard especially at night a decent light will mean her chances of being located and recovered significantly improve.
The weedy light on a lifejacket just isn't going to hack it.

Yes - normally £18.99.

Was spiked to £20.99 a few days ago to make the saving look bigger.

I'm very impressed with mine, overkill for inside buildings though

TBH in the OPs case I think I prefer a head torch and my hands free - I have one of the £5 ebay ones that takes 2x 18650 and it's very good

Would only let me select the UV one as a returning customer which I thought was poor form, haven't bothered as don't think it's worth the £5 postage.

I ordered one. Who doesn't need a UV torch?
Well me probably but why not.

That was my thoughts with the "free" key ring one.

I ordered a BLF Q8 after seeing it mentioned in this thread and on the candle forums. Wowza very pleased. Can't wait to take it out on my mtb later.

I've become a bit of an Olight fanboy these days and of course one needs a UV torch. All I need is some sort of reflective thing for the dog and dark walks are sorted.

Of course it would have been rude not to pick up one of these while getting stuff for free!
