Looking for a present ... head torch for circa £25 ... any recommendations?
The Alpkit Viper was highly recommended by people who used it, especially at about £20.
It didn't come with any packaging when I got one for my brother, who now takes it everywhere.

What is / who is the current recommendation for 18650 cells? They don't need to be the best, just decent. They're (8) going in to a power bank.
These are one of the better ones

https://eu.nkon.nl/lg-inr18650-mj1.html

also available in button top if that's needed.
Thanks; wandered off and forgot that I'd asked!

Link no workee, though.

Recommendations needed please - a very small keyring torch - my works carpark is unlit and pitch black when I turn up and leave the office

Preferences:-

USB rechargeable
Button switch (rather than a twist cap)

I started off looking at Nitcore Thumb, which quickly drifted into Nitecore TINI and before I knew it, I was looking at Nitecore TIP2 and TUP

Obviously, I want the impossible conbination of low price, great quality, tiny size and many hundreds of lumens.....

I liked the look of the Olight i1R, but I'm not sure I could live with the twist cap

Any thoughts?

While I understand the aversion to twisty lights I can recommend the latest mark 2 version of the Olight i1r.

It's remarkably bright for its tiny little size, the latest version has a captive end piece, so twist tighter for 2 brightness levels and unscrew for off, there's plenty of thread and when you get to the end of the thread it exposes the usb port but stays in place and can't be removed. Much better than a rubber flap IMO as the port is internal to the torch in normal use.

Some of the other suggestions aren't a key ring torch to my mind as they're too big, especially with modern key fobs already being significant in size and already having a tiny SAK on my keys.

I also own the S1R mentioned above and or is a good little torch but not on a key ring.
Having looked at all the suggestions, it was clear that I could have tiny or bright, but not both. Whilst the geek in me wanted 1,000+ lumens, I realised that the 10-metre walk across the carpark probably didn't warrant it (and I have a TM06S if I want to go bright...)

So - I took Jimbob's advice and gut the absolutely miniscule Olight i1r - I very quickly got over my dislike for twist switches and I'm very chuffed with it. 130 lumens is more than enough (and is actually ridiculously bright for a torch that is notably smaller than an AA battery)

So - for once, I've done the smart thing and buy a torch that is just right for the purpose, rather than stupidly over-endowed.

Problem is - while I was on the Olight website, I spotted the X7R Marauder - 12,000 lumens of pointlessness, but I want one

I ordered one. Who doesn't need a UV torch?
Well me probably but why not.
I got the UV torch as a freebie amongst other things. Very cool but BOY the house looks dusty under UV light. I thought they were only good for showing up underwear at a club but no, seems they make a list of jobs for me to do too.

Without going back through 150 pages can any one give me the consensus on the best all rounder for under £50? Will be used to take bins out and at Glastonbury. Have a head torch already.

As an aside does anyone know how to remove battery acid from inside a torch. Opened my old one up - ledlenser and a battery has split leaving a white residue inside.

Depends what you want and whether you have 18650 batteries and charger already.

I am very happy with my new bargain lightsabre, XHP50 LED with 26650 battery :

https://www.amazon.co.uk/LEEBA-Flashlight-Charging...

No charger in my case, but the battery can be charged within the torch via USB,

and also can act as power bank for charging other appliances such as phones.

I run my "spare" 5200maH battery and it is amazing.

The zoom is very smooth, if it should wear out a slightly bigger o-ring should make it firmer to move.

The switch has no memory function, I have to scroll through the 6 modes to turn off, but I am OK with that.

Went to Spain earlier this month and on return my suitcase stank of burnt plastic, discovered the cause was my flashlight which turned on in transit and burnt partway through the case!

Could have ended catastrophically but luckily it looks like the thermal cut out kicked in, I'm sure that I put the torch into transport mode before packing it but in the future will also unscrew the tailcap to break the circuit so physically it can't turn on.

I can recommend the Astrolux EC01, I bought it after it was suggested in this thread a few pages back and it arrived just before christmas, it takes a 18650 or 21700 cell and also charges via USB.
Did some back to back testing with my Imalent DM70 which cost 4x as much as there wasn't much in it to the human eye, ended up giving it to my brother as a christmas present and it feels a lot more premium than the price suggests.

I always find these two sites to be very good at picking out torches/batteries as there really is a lot of old ste out there bigged up on advertising but either falls apart after a week or is just crap.

http://budgetlightforum.com/forum

https://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/forum.php

I've got all my torch/battery/charger choices from researching on those two places.

Also can anyone recommend a handheld torch which can be recharged by a plug in cable. I don't want to have a separate charger.

Most of the Olights use their magnetic USB charging lead which I really like. The only downside to the system is they use non standard batteries although some torches can take a standard 18650 but then the charging won't work.

There's a wide variety of Olights with the magnetic charger to suit most needs (I've got 4 of the buggers I like them that much)

Olights aren't the cheapest and their are others available that also offer integrated charging but they do have frequent sales on the Olight website

Ha good point but yes a handtorch...

That Amazon one looks great.

Cheers all.
Olight ones do look nice but probably want something better value.
