Hi all,

Need some torch help please

Child number two threw our torch in a lake yesterday, so now we need a new one.

We also need a head torch.

We have a load of protected 18650s.

Don't want to spend much more than 20 to 30 on each.... What's best bang for buck rightnow? L

Can anyone recommend a replacement to my single AA battery LED Lenser torch which just died after many years service.

Basically want something as bright as possible but in a single AA, double AA or other sort of compact body.

Thanks!
Lumintop Tool AA 2.0 (also uses li ion 14500 for super bright goodness in a tiny package (also good as a hand warmer if used in the winter on high power with a 14500)
That looks perfect thanks.

And its only £18.99 on Amazon!
If you can afford to wait a bit, you'll get it for around half that on Ali/banggood

You're a bad person 300bhp.

I was on Banggood checking out my order which was discussed the other day, where I ended up buying not one but two torches, saw that offer above, and remembered my LED Lenser P7.2 went missing a few days back. Either been dropped in one of the fields, have looked, dog not found it either which is a typical result. For 8 quid or so it's rude not to.

Not many flood to throw AA lights. I'm guessing this is what your Led Lenser was?

2 x AA are a lot longer, and a lot less pocket friendly.

If you are prepared to go Li-ion, then there are many compact 18650 lights. These will have much higher performance.

If you want smaller, then there are some AA lights that will run on a Li-ion 14500 battery (same size as an AA). But while they can put out a lot of light for their size. Run times can suffer. Although at lower outputs they can still be very good.

If you want to stick with normal AA's (don't use alkaline batteries!!!! Use lithium primaries or NiMh rechargeables). Zebralight probably do the best single AA you can get.

Suspect the Armyteks might be pretty good too:

Or if you want to go cheaper. Convoy T2:

I've recently got myself a Lumintop HL3A head torch - it's currently £50 on Amazon - https://amzn.to/3p8If2p - but I paid £35 for it in early October.
Decent head strap, easy to use the button, light and compact and very bright on Turbo which lasts a good few minutes before ramping down.

I liked the look of the Convoy S2+ but wanted a torch with a side switch. I find the more traditional switch close to the head a lot easier to operate so went for the Sofirn SC31 Pro..

It's a larger torch powered by an 18650 but still easy to carry in a pocket. Mine came with the battery and it has USB charging.

I have just received an Astrolux EC01 from banggood as per recommendation up thread. I am a tad disappointed it doesn't come with a battery though (probably said so in the blurb but naturally I didn't read it). It says it needs a 21700 battery whatever that is. Where is best place to get them as I noticed they don't do them on the battery racks in supermarkets?

Btw, if you're ordering from banggood, whatever you do, make sure you order using a throwaway email address. The spam is insane and the opt-out link doesn't work.
Most torches do not come with batteries. Especially Li-ion powered ones.

They are rechargeable, so you’ll need a quality charger too. Also worth having a digital multi meter too.

Li-ion are great. But you really should read up on them. They can be highly hazardous. So you need to treat them a bit similar to how you’d treat a can of petrol.
I'm fairly sure the EC01 is supplies, or you can buy a plastic sleeve that adapts the 21700 battery to a 18650 battery.

I bought a EC01 and a 21700 battery, and realised when it arrived that I could have used my 18650 supply.

What's a good charger for lithium cells? I've been given a torch with 2x18650 in it and the cheapo things that plug into USB sockets don't inspire confidence.

Xtar V4, yes, I have one, it is good, but a little slow, if you care about such things, will make the batteries last longer though, can charge 2x 18650 at 1A or 4 at 0.5A

I have more than 3 batteries so it doesn't bother me if it takes a while, others may not like that.

Got my 7 year old 2D Maglite replaced FOC yesterday with a newer 2D type (multi function switch, full power / half power).

Easy process thanks to Burton McCall in Leicester.

Still decent lights & brighter than the lumen count suggests.

Great thanks. Always handy to have in the car. Do you just pay shipping on these or do you have to get with another product? I may have to look at the head lights they do.

I have a 2xAA MiniMaglite, it has done sterling service, but is very much a distant second best to my £8 Lidl 3W single USB rechargeable 18650 now. These are very weedy in current terms, but absolutely blow my MiniMag into the weeds.. If you really want it repaired, it is best to drop the manufacturer a line really, although I suspect the postage on returning your torch would be more than a new torch.

You can order it on it's own and pay postage just under a fiver, comes by courier, or I think you can add it as a freebie when ordering other stuff. Actually I think from memory you have to "share" the advert for it before you can order it but all you have to do is click the share button to get a faceache link and the item can be added to your basket whether you send that link to anyone or not.

Correct - once the link is shared, regardless whether it is posted or not, the item appears in the basket.
I think on this occasion though it will not appear until the black friday event starts?

It also looks like the X7R has been discontinued on their website, but is still on Amazon at £252 - https://amzn.to/2IM9BdR
I wonder if that will go on clearance soon...?

Blimey, I have just spent an hour on this thread and never realized ‘this’ was even a thing!!! I hope I don’t become an addict, but thinking about it I do have a number of torches including a hope m/b head torch.

Anyway, I am going around in circles so anyone got any recommends please that fit my criteria before I lose the will and just order the Olight Seeker2pro at £89.97 (which is far more than I want to pay)

Primarily to be used for dog walking, so a nice throw and possibly a zoom (but doesn’t need to have a 15 mile penetration)
I want a good quality hand torch from a well known manufacturer – perhaps 100-125mm long
Don’t particularly like all the morse/flashing modes.
Must be built in battery (presumably Li-ion) with USB charger
Must hold charge a long time and preferably a long use time between charges.
I don’t want to use a Chinese website and I try to purchase goods not made in China.
I didn’t want to spend more than £50 and would prefer less (but like you lot, will pay more if necessary)

Thanks in anticipation!!

Thank you – a great suggestion, but I would rather the torch has a ‘sealed battery’ so doesn’t need to be removed from the torch to be charged – ie, the usb plugs directly in to the torch.

That's not always a great idea, if/when the battery goes you're screwed, better to get a regular one that you can change/swap as required. Does mean you need to get a charger etc but these are one-off costs.
