Raspberry Pi - Who's gonna have a dabble?
Discussion
Not got far enough through the setup to be able to pair to the BT keyboard yet. I'm hoping once I'm through the setup I should be able to connect Yatse to it via WiFi, and then enable bluetoth and connect the other keyboard it that way.
Interestingly when I got to the "Name your device" screen it let me type in a new name without any problems, but as soon as I went on the the next screen in blanked out again, which suggests it's some odd software thing rather than hardware.
I'd have to cut up a USB cable to be able to power it via GPIO as Iv'e not got any cables for it.

have a look at the HDMI settings in the config.txt file in the / diretry of the sd card ( stick the card into your laptop/pc )
https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configur...
https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configur...
Starting it up once it's finished going through all the config screen I get the initial splash screen, then nothing for a while, and then it shows the main kodi menu but vanishes as soon as I press a key. Config file looks like this:
arm_freq=850
core_freq=375
gpu_mem_256=112
gpu_mem_512=144
hdmi_ignore_cec_init=1
disable_overscan=1
start_x=1
disable_splash=1
I added the following to the end
hdmi_safe=1
and when I started it I just got a blank screen, about a minute later it very briefly flashed up the main menu screen on kodi and then went blank again.
The config file for my Pi 2 looks like this:
gpu_mem_1024=256
hdmi_ignore_cec_init=1
disable_overscan=1
start_x=1
disable_splash=1
dtoverlay=lirc-rpi
gpu_mem_256=112
sdtv_aspect=1
dtparam=gpio_in_pin=18
gpu_mem_512=144
dtparam=gpio_out_pin=17
Note they both have the hdmi_ignore_sec=1 so I assume that's not causing a problem.
Tried:
config_hdmi_boost=5
in case it's not putting out a strong enough signal for the telly. It shows the splash screen and then dies again
Tried:
hdmi_group=1
hdmi_mode=1
Which should force it to VGA, but don't even see the splash screen.
Think I'm going to have to go through the menu's very slowly to set up the wifi and see what happens when I control it with Yatse

Thanks for trying.
Just gone though the menu's and it's showing an option to enable the wired network adapter, which it doesn't have, but no option for the wifi. This has to be some issue with OSMC as the card originally had NOOBS on it and I connected it to my wifi (without any keyboard/HDMI issues to download OSMC.
I'll try a different OS tomorrow to see if that's any different. My Pi 2 is running the same version (OSMC 2017.02-2) without any problems, but I'm wondering if it's not got all the right drivers for the Zero-W yet
ETA: Should have looked harder at the OSMC forums, just found a post saying Wifi and BT support aren't in yet. D'Oh.

Formatted the card and put NOOBS Lite on. No issue with HDMI/keyboard except the image is very pink/purple (as it was with OSMC but I had assumed that was just the standard background colour). Connected to my wifi, downloaded OpenELEC...and had the same problem.
Reformatted and put NOOBS back on, installed Raspian. Wifi and BT work fine, screen is still very pink only now it's a lot more noticeable as it's a windows style interface with areas that should clearly be white and not bright pink. After a few minutes it dropped the HDMI signal again.
Internet wisdom suggests config_hdmi_boost might be answer to the colour thing, but looking at the card on my PC it seems to have formatted a small partition called Recovery, which doesn't have a config file anywhere in it, and I'm not seeing the other partitions.
Reformatted the card and currently downloading a full Raspbian install to see if that's different from doing it via NOOBS...

Latest RP 3 has a reasonable CPU, for an ARM, but low RAM, only 1GB.
I assume that's not expandable ;-<
Anyone know of a beefier ARM based SBC with more RAM ?
If it runs Linux, even better. Otherwise I'll wait for the RP 4 or 5.

I wish I'd bought one of these instead of the Pi now (which I bought yesterday!).
I have found the latest MagPi mag in stock, so I now have a freebie Raspberry Pi AIY Google Voice kit (So I can make a sorta Google Home but it's cardboard and I have to press the button)
https://www.raspberrypi.org/magpi/google-aiy-voice....
I don't have an RPi 3, mine is a 2, the mag and the kit says I need an RPi 3. In the video in that link, the guy mentions that it will work with a 2. Will it though? I don't mind buying a 3 for it (or a Zero W ?), but if it works with the 2 I've got that would be great.
Edit. According to here https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f... it will work with other RPi that have the 40 pin GPIO. I'll get a Zero W so that it's got the wireless on board.

Raspberry Pi overtakes Commodore 64 to become third best selling home computer after the PC and Mac:

I've been building an interesting little system with mine the last few months, interfacing it with all manner of sensors and a touch screen with some animated graphics and I'm really impressed with it and the python language.

It seems there is a disturbance in the force.

There's an updated 3B+ model now, 1.4GHz with faster WiFi and ethernet https://thepihut.com/products/raspberry-pi-3-model...

300Mb/sec and 5Ghz wifi.. now that is an improvment! Still waiting for windows UWP to accommodate the graphics on the pi. Seems that its ultimate stalemate and neither said want to touch it.
Shame. Learning python now due to sons learning it at school. Don't like it because it makes too many assumptions about data types.
Obviously feeling negative this morning, must try harder

I like the the enforced formatting in python make it somewhat readable no matter how spaghettified it gets!
Oh yeah, get your son to check out the below for python goodness
