I have dropped my Desire a number of times over the years and it's never smashed the glass, luckily. In fact I have never seen an Android with a cracked and crazed front but many of my mates and workmates have smashed iPhones that they still use, including my daughters iPod.

Are they made out of different glass?

I think the glass is roughly the same (Apple is very secret about the materials used), though laboratory test have shown that it's very hard but quite brittle (harder makes it harder to scratch, brittle makes it easier to shatter).
I don't think that it's a composition thing, it's more a design thing in the iPhone, if you drop it on it's side it's very easy to have the glass make direct contact with the floor, not many glass panels would survive such a drop. Most other phones, also the older iphones, have a plastic or metal edge that serves as a "bumper".
The iPhone 5 solves this for a part as it has stretched the aluminium edge so that it covers the glass a bit better. I won't be surprised that it'll beat the iPhone 4(S) easily in any drop test because of that, even if the glass is larger and therefore more "fragile".

I don't know about the glass but I'd suggest it's to do with the design and the glass running right to the edge of the phone with no buffer area to absorb impact if it land on the corners which is why at least a bump case is advisable.

I think the battery life is very good on mine, certainly a huge improvement on the HTC Desire I had before it.

On Saturday I was messing with the phone quite a lot through the day, browsing Instagram, adding friends on there, taking pics, downloading apps, browsing the net, right up to around 11pm when I went to sleep. It was showing battery remaining to be around 35% I think.

If it helps, mine has been dropped a few times in the last 2 weeks (we have a toddler!) and it's showing a few dents and scratches to the edge of the casing, but the screen is fine.

(Yes, I have ordered a case now!)

As I said, the 5 is much better in that aspect, drop tests also confirm that (however they're hardly "representative"). The aluminium protects the glass better than the steel ever did.
It also makes it a much more comfortable phone to hold. However "sleek" the 4(S) looked, I thought that functionality-wise, it was one of the worst designs in the last years. Uncomfortably (for me) sharp to hold, easy to shatter (front and back!), and way to heavy for it's size. All of that's solved with the 5, now on to the software! wink

Wrap it heavily in bubble wrap and sticky tape.

It'll prevent it getting to the phone.

This may sound like a daft question, but I don't have any rugrats...

What is a toddler doing with your iPhone in the first place?

I'm about to pre-order for my 5 Black.

Help with colour choice?

I've had both black and brown for my 5 so was thinking tan but is it a bit horrible? I can't work out if it's nice or ste.

Probably go for brown if not tan.

Maybe tan would end up grubby?

Has anyone had a real play around with the 3D elements of the maps? Whilst the actual maps are ste, some of the 3d stuff is very impressive. Trees look a bit odd but New York and Sydney for example look amazing.

Spent a few hours just flying around so far! biggrin

Had a play with NYC and I agree. First place I went knowing that they'd have got it right there.

Imagine how good it'll be worldwide!

My 5's battery life is complete ste.
I've downloaded battery doctor, which is also ste.
It says to save x amount of battery turn off bluetooth, bluetooth is turned off already.
I took it off charge at 8am yesterday, i read about 5 emails through-out the day & used Facebook on my lunchbreak (30mins) (but not for all 30mins of it).
I also made a 30min phone conversation.
The phone was dead by 7pm.

My IP4's battery wasn't great come the end of it's life but it was a darn sight better than that.

I had a moan about it yesterday. Having one cable doesn't help either!!!!

Maybe its similar to the 4 but it would charge to and from work and when it was at my desk.

Very annoying though.

Mine is much better than my 4. I just checked mine and since 6.00am when I took it off charge I've had 3 hrs use and about ten hours standby. The usage was emails, maps, phone calls (even a quick FaceTime to try) and texts amongst others like web browsing.

I have half brighness, no auto mode.

Currently on 53% which is better than I used to get.
