True, although Overdrive who provide the lending service to US libraries continue to say it may come to the UK soon. It's been 'soon' for awhile though. The truth is though you can get the library ebooks you can get on those other readers onto a Kindle, but it requires some software (Calibre) and library books with no drm.

It's the one product/gadget that I have not felt compelled to upgrade at every release. The original 3g one is still pretty much the perfect reading device.
Agree with you, although the built in light (if done well) might sway me though. My daughters always borrowing my current Kindle so...Seriously thinking about a Kindle and the backlit version is just what I'm waiting for. However, the Kindle Fire isn't that much more, so I don't know which to go for. I read a lot of aviation/historical books, that are often have illustrations/photos etc. I'm assuming the basic Kindle doesn't do photos, but does the Fire have this capability

My daughters always borrowing my current Kindle so...I just have the basic no keyboard kindle4 and it is pretty much perfect for what it does. I like the side page turn buttons, they are perfectly positioned. I have no issues with the menu system off the directional button thing (lets be fair, once you have a collection of books on there you don't often need the on screen keyboard).
I'm torn on the paperwhite as I tried the touch and didn't like the lack of page turn buttons and actually didn't like the touch screen much either. But I do love the backlit screen idea. Now if they could put the Paperwhite backlit screen in the non touch kindle4 non keyboard....
Come on Amazon... create another model line!!

Basic kindle will do photos fine, though obviously not in colour. I keep my MR2 service manual on mine. It isn't the easiest thing to reference, but it works. When I first saw these announced, I thought DO WANT! But I have seen some of the reviews, and I dunno now. It is more expensive than I thought it would be.
I should say that I don't yet have a Kindle. I read the odd paperback now and then, but I really need something that I can read technical documents on too (or at least technical books) and I don't think the slightly higher res Paperwhite is quite good enough. The light looks excellent, but only 1.25GB free memory and no SD card slot? That just smacks of penny-pinching and a desire to make it finally profitable for Amazon. Technical books and documents can easily be 10MB, and I'd really want to carry a library of them rather than swap around over WiFi. The lack of buttons doesn't bother me much, but in the YouTube videos the touch screen doesn't seem that responsive.
I was thinking about this, but I suspect support would be zero, and it is getting towards laptop money: http://www.onyxboox.com/product_info.php?cPath=21&...
The Nook HD+ is supposed to be here in the UK in early November, starting at £229. I realise it has conventional LCD, but that's a big spec (9in 1920x1200 screen, microSD card, 16GB) for half-an-iPad money. So I may go for a cheap "old" style Kindle for novels and bedtime reading, and a Nook HD+.
