As you may have noticed my pc was having trouble with crashing after installing SP2. I unistalled it and whilest it didnt seem to crash as much was still crashing.

It now wont turn on.

I get this error.

Lsass.exe - unable to locate compnent.

MPR.dll was not found re install aplication.

PC just stalls at that point.

I have looked on the net at work (this pc now sod em its overtime) and it seems to suggest its teh SASSER worm virus thingy.

Thing is my pc was always updated would romoving SP2 have removed the protection from this virus?

I have some pictures of the kids on there that i would like to retrive. It seems the only way is to insatll another HD and put XP on that then I should be able to access my old drives(2 drives running in RAID)

Anyone know if this would work or any other ideas?

I've installed XP onto another partition in the past to retrieve files that I needed, wiped and re-installed.

MS has a sasser worm removal tool on their homepage IIRC, can you boot into Safe Mode?

Great how many problems SP2 is causing , well not from a users pov but from MS inability to do things pov

You are quite correct. thats the problem with googling for problems you get lots of forums and some people do add there bit and they are not always correct like they are on pistonheads.

I am winning the battle. I have loaded XP on in a different directory and I can now acces my files.

I have put in another HD which I intend to tranfer the files to and then format the origonal drive.

The PC does see the new drive and say its working correctly in device manager but it sdosnt show up yet through my computer . mmm

PS the pc still just turns itself off every now and again and then takes about 30 minutes to turn on again
so still big problems but it looks like i may be able to retrive my files at least

Ok I had to download a win 98 boot up disk so I could F disk the new drive and then format it from windows .

I prefer working on cars myself this is turning into a right saga.

PC still turns off and wont turn off until you switch off at the wall any ideas?

will tranfer my files to new drive and then format old drives(RAID)

OK I have now got my pc up again.

I installed sp2 on a clean instaleation of xp and then put my drivers on one by one. all ok.

The last one was BT voyager 100 driver and aol 9.

PC then crashed and I got blue screen. So does this mean that sp2 dosnt like aol or the BT driver?

ps. PC still takes ages to turn on and turns itself off. I am asuming its the power suply and have ordered a new one. because it was doing this with no hard drives conected) Either that or mother board

James here:

Feel sorry for me, after trying SP2 once and ending up doing a full rebuild. I've now tried again and it's installed however now my previously perfect effing password appears to have no use.....

...I gues the only way into XP home with no password is revert to a previous backup or a format and start from scratch...arse..
