ISP stopping support for Windows hosting - help!
Discussion
I run a site for a colleague of mine which i've built using asp and vbscript, with an SQL database, all fairly straightforward stuff really. The host that has looked after this for the last couple of years on an NT/2000 box will, with effect from Friday, be turning off any NT hosting and moving to Linux/MySQL only...
Can anyone give any guidance as to the best way forward for this - is it worth reworking the whole thing to work with the new system (bearing in mind I have 3 evenings to do this!), or look for a new host of an MS based system?
Currently paying £399pa for 1Gb server space with SQL hosting. Any reccomendations of where else to go at all, or anyone here do suitable easily set up hosting? I think i'd prefer this route to recoding it all....
Cheers folks,
Tony

Hi,
we dont do Virtual windows hosting, but if your friend can increase his budget, then I can sort him a cheap Dedicated Server.
I will check stock, see if we have any cheaper servers available,
the issue you will find is SQL costs alot of money, to make it work you would need to host ALOT of ppl on a windows box, which in turn typically requires a beefy multi-cpu system, which then increases the SQL costs again....
IF your friend can come up with licenses, it would make it ALOT cheaper!
mail me thru profile if you want a chat.
Disgusting service that gives the whole industry a bad name!

My company may be able to help you out with this, bigtone. Could you email me with details of the set up (nature of website, size of SQL/ ASP files; does it use any third party DLLs etc?) and I'll have a word with the boss.
The Power of PH.
If you get desperate, and dont have any other viable option, what I will sort for you, as a Longstanding PH'r....
IF you need somewhere tempoary for the site to go, I will cobble up a box with a MsSQL 2000 Trial License, and Windows 2000 Trial License on one of my Spare Servers, so long as you cover the b/w.
Offers there should you need it (lemme know in advance tho, as I will have to blat a machine)
Many many thanks to all for help, advice and emails - i'm in the process of getting some stats on the current usage from the hosts, and will be in touch again when I have them. As I just designed and maintain the system, it's not actually me that pays for it, but the owner of the site (you never know, he might pay me for sorting it out for him!) but we can cross that bridge when we come to it.
Cheers again,
Tony
