I am looking to purchase a laptop PC in the not too distant future. I have seen one with the Intel Pentium M 725 CPU, and another with the AMD Athlon 64 3000+ CPU. There does not seem to be much difference in price for either one.

I am more interested in processor power/speed to run programs and the odd game, rather than the portability of the lighter and less battery power of the M 725 CPU.

I guess what I would like to know is whether both CPU's are as fast as each other or not?

Cheers

Athlon 64 3000 = 2.0 Ghz 64 bit processor.
Pentium M 725 = 1.6 Ghz 32 bit processor.

That pretty much sums it up.

Not that 64 vs. 32 gets you much now, but it may in the future if you upgrade to a 64 bit OS.

For a review that compares the new intel processors to various other processors see:

The intel notebook processor with a performance equivalent to the Athlon 64 3000 appears to be the Pentium M 755, which just happens to run at 2.0 Ghz also.

Thanks for that, the Athlon 64 3000+ it is then.

I was unsure whether the L2 cache difference, M 725 at 2MB and Athlon with 512KB, made them both about equal.

I think Intel's larger cache is about balanced by AMD's better memory controller, leaving you with AMD's better price/Ghz and 64bit future capabilities.
