How to rename my external HDD?
Discussion
I have a WD 500GB My Passport external hard drive that i have renamed in Windows. It shows up in Windows under the name I want, but when i plug it into the back of the TV it still shows up as My Passport rather than the name i want.
It not life or death obviously, but i just wondered if there was any way to change it?
Thanks

Don't know if this will work but it shouldn't take long to try.

Thanks. I've just tried this but i'm afraid it doesn't work. Don't know if this will work but it shouldn't take long to try.

Even when i safely eject it, it still comes up as My Passport, with the new name shown underneath.

If you watch on safely remove device menu it will usually give you the devices name and then below show you the drive letter and name.
It will be how devices can auto detect what a usb device being plugged in does.
To answer the OP : NO
You can call it what you want with a PC but when connecting to your TV as has been previously noted it reads the info from whatever info is in the motherboard part of the controller on the device.
Last year I purchased many Western Digital Elements drives originally for their internal hard drive which was then fitted into PC's This left me with many WD Elements cases and power supplies - I then experimented by fitting various smaller capacity 160gb/ 320 Gb etc 3.5" drives into them and selling them on as smart TV drives, after testing them on my own Samsung they would always default to the name on the controller irrespective of whichever drive was connected to it.
