Not cheap as chips, but might be good for DosBox etc.? scratchchin

I had a bluetooth keyboard with my N7 but the biggest PITA with that was the lack of F-keys on the top row.

Planning on getting mum one of these for Christmas. She just wanted a Kindle for e-book reading but think that this will be better value. We have wi-fi at home so it makes sense to me. Just got to decide on a colour. Think that black will make it look cheap. Shame there is no silver, so I think it will have to be red.

Nothing beats a Kindle for reading though....reading on a glossy tablet colour screen is tiring and the battery life could be an issue.

It's silly having a tablet for reading books on, it will strain your eyes, and as it's been mentioned, battery like will be an issue...

A kindle on the other hand, is like reading a paperback book, the kindle paperwhite means you can read in low light conditions without a problem.
The battery also lasts months!.

A genuine kindle will be cheaper and massively better at the job of "reading" than the Hudl. We are genuinely talking about a night and day difference.

Now, if someone only occasionally reads books, and primarily wants a device for browsing, watching videos, etc. then by all means go this route. But if the primary driver is for the reading of books - Kindle all the way.

I have an original Hudl, and I've just had the Tesco Christmas vouchers for the Clubcard. Between trading in the Hudl at a CEX or similar, doubling the vouchers with the Boost thing and some saved up £2 coins, in man maths I could get a Hudl 2 for about £10.

Things I like:
Looks the same size, 1080p screen, faster, more RAM.

Things I'm not sure of:
Hudl never got the update to Android 4.4 KitKat last year. Android 5 is imminent, or already here. Will Hudl2 ever get it?

I could put the vouchers towards something else instead, presents or a christmas food shop.

Yet despite that, the Hudl still works fine.

I haven't yet had an update to my 2012 N7 that has actually done anything useful. So its not really worth worrying about the OS updates.

Obviously highlights one problem... you can't charge and use the keyboard at the same time. It would help if I charged it up fully last night though. Otherwise works great for general typing, DosBox (inc full set of function keys), playing Megadrive/SNES emulator etc.

Yes I've just bought one for my mother, if it was mine I'd consider rooting it and cleaning it up. For now I've set up another user account, with most of the Tesco stuff left off.

I bought the Hudl 2 for my mother in law for Christmas.

Seriously impressed with the piece of kit. I myself have a 32GB HP Touchpad with CM11 (The one from the firesale years ago).

I would consider a Hudl 2 as very good value tablet.

When I last checked a month ago, the procedure is not simple and risks bricking the Hudl due to the encrypted bootloader (or similar), which also prevents a custom ROM (Cyanogenmod etc.) being installed. Shame but it runs excellent under Kitkat anyway so not a big deal yet.

Anyone here had a go?

They have rooted it on Modaco, but can't flash anything worthwhile on to it due to, as you say, bootloader issues.

Best thing to do with the Hudl 2 is to disable all the Tesco crapware and stick a different launcher on it: Something like Nova Launcher or Apex Launcher would be ideal (probably best to pay the couple of quid for the 'prime' versions though)

That's what I've done smile I use Nova launcher. For ad-blocking (something I'd previous used root for) I've used Adblock Plus which requires a bit of initial set up with the proxy settings but can then be forgotten about.

I bought one of these for my daughter at Christmas. While she is playing one free game it will stop and show an advert for another game for 30 seconds before sh can go back to playing again.
How do I stop this?

wen you disable the tesco crap, it that it disabled for good, or do you need to do it all the time. I put google launcher on it . is this going to help ?

Thats down to the game / app you are playing rather than the Hudl.

Seriously thinking about one of these to replace my 2012 Nexus 7 which didn't survive the Lolipop upgrade. Those who bought Hudl2 pre-Christmas, how are you getting on with it?

Mine's fine. None of the reported issues some people have had with clock losing time, charging problems. I did have it putting up weird lines on the screen when waking up/sleeping sometimes (cured by a reboot each time) but they haven't come back since the most recent software upgrade.

For the money, unbeatable I think.
