Due to Apple security?
It's due to Apple that much is true.Apple certify the whole system for Homekit.
So for example both Hue and IKEA Tradfri are ZigBee based systems where it is possible to use bulbs in each ecosystem. Both systems only work in Homekit using their own branded bulbs but not if you use one brand with another.
It's dead easy to get round with a piece of software called homebridge running on your network (a raspberry pi or even some NAS drives can do this)

Smart switch sorry to replace all the house switches, they can control hue which is what I will do but through a raspberry pi running home assistant.
Im looking for something like this, from a reliable brand:https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Zigbee-3-0-1-2-3-Gang-S...
We are using these Z-Wave ones - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32795668194.html I use them with the Aeon Labs Z-Wave dongle in Home Assistant (running in Docker on a Gigabyte NUC-clone). They are quite nice to use, easy to set up/install. You can even disable the button LED if you wish, although I find leaving it on makes them easier to find in the dark.
I also have the Fibaro Keyfob, which is also Z-Wave (buttons are like a Playstation controller), but means you can set up handy automations etc without having to touch an app.

Bought some of the Lidl smart plugs today, got them set up on my hue bridge. As I have seen mentioned above I just need to get a raspberry pi ordered now and follow this tutorial to get homebridge installed.
Would the 4gb ram pi be fine to use or should I go for 8/16gb just to future proof things?

Just looked it up - £7.99 each !!! - was £34 for a pair on INNR ones and they're now going for £40 though do work well. Might have to pop in tomorrow and see if there's any (left) in the Watford store - could do with a spare 1-2 at that price.dapprman said:

IMO, the 4GB Pi will be fine. Homebridge supports older Pi's, so the newer one with 4GB RAM will fly. 8GB will be overkill unless you plan to attach a screen and put a proper Desktop Environment on it.Would the 4gb ram pi be fine to use or should I go for 8/16gb just to future proof things?
