Expensive yes. But then out of around 40 Hue lights (mainly GU10's and a fair mix of others) not one has failed yet in three years.
Why would they fail?

LAP here 4 years in, 1 failed replaced, under a quid each
Ask the electrickery Gods! Previous lamps fitted on the same circuits (mostly bought from the sheds like most people do) have popped left right and centre and in no particular order.

Never had a hue bulb fail but have had megaman GE osram fail. All are decent makes. Lap and JCB bulbs are chinese cack but then again they are priced accordingly so can't grumble.

Edit: Can't find any LAP coloured lamps anywhere for a comparison. Got a link?

The chip only maybe?

Wiki hasn't much to say on Phillips lighting and China apart from a lighting facility that is now shut.

Maybe it would have been quicker and less speculative to look on the product where it says "Made in China"

and to take away your minor victory it is fairly unlikely that the chip is made in China!

No victories to "take away" I wasn't looking for one - I like to find out what's what and try to avoid confirmation bias.

Slightly off topic but I used to work for LG Electronics Wales we "made" the original imacs for Apple! Never said made in Wales on the box wink

I took the Lidl GU10’s back today no queue and no fuss at the till, now to find the best deal on hue ones although I think I might wait to see if there are any sales type deals.

Of the 4-5 standard bulbs I fitted for my parents in table lamps that are on most of the day, 2 have failed over a period of 3 years or so, which is disappointing given the price.

That said, the 4-5 on pendant fittings/table lamps in my own house have been fine over a similar period.

Mind you, my mother can bugger up a smartphone just by looking at it and my Dad knacker a tablet by switching it off so perhaps a 40% smartbulb failure rate in a geriatric household is reasonable.

The LIDL strip does NOT work with hue. It uses a slightly different part of the ZigBee protocol which Hue doesn't support.

The LIDL smart plug does work fine though.
Ah, interesting, when you say smart plug, d'you mean this one?

If so, it's a third of the cost of the Hue version!

Had an issue with my LOHAS multi colour bulb not connecting with network even with Lohas smart app and the bulb was permanent on. Sent them an email as life time of 30,000hrs but only just over 1 year and amazon said its outside quality assurance so not replacement. Turn off unit for over 24 hrs and seams to fixed itself but for how long no idea!

Wasn't meant as a dig, just a comment that China are generally not the go to place for chip manufacture.

I bagged a couple of Lidl smart plugs although, I presently have no use for them as I already have several TP Link (Kasa) plugs. These were an absolute doddle to set up and were quickly detected by the Hue hub (as bulbs). I then instantly got a notification from Amazon Alexa that they’d been added. This is a lot easier than the TP Link ones where you have to connect via wifi etc. I’ve added a couple of Lidl strip lights to my AV rack and whilst they look good, they are now lighting up the snake’s wedding of cables at the rear. That’s a project for 2021, to finally tidy them up properly.

Another project is to get a proper Hue outside light. I have a Hue bulb in my present fitting which works fine but when I went to buy one on Black Friday, they were sold out.

Got my parents some Hue stuff for Christmas and quickly added some of the Lidl stuff (which is excellent as above)

And recommendations for wall switches?

I just dipped my toe in the water too.

The Hue Wall Button is simple and effective.
