Seem to have answered my own question. You can use any alexa in the house to make/receive calls.
I assume it'll only dial numbers from one person's contacts list so not much good for the other adults in the house with their own contacts lists?
I wonder if it can also dial numbers that aren't in your contacts list?
ie "Alexa, dial 07992 222345"
I'm no audiophile, so my music setup consists of a bluetooth speaker. As I had that, I thought I'd get an Echo Dot rather than the full Echo with the speaker built in.
It generally works fine, but I do find that if I tell Alexa to "turn on the coffee machine", and activate the Wemo switch, the singular "OK" response isn't heard but all subsequent replies work well. It appears that Echo doesn't wait for the bluetooth speaker to 'wake up' if it's not done much for a while, and so the "ok" is lost.
If I preface the command with "Alexa Hello", I'll hear a " 'lo" form the speaker as it wakes up and outputs the tail end of the word, and then later commands are fine until it goes to sleep again.
Anyone know if there's a way to ensure the echo keeps the bluetooth link alive?

I must do that about 10 times a day as my internet drops out working from home. Each time I re-boot it I must independently re-boot the Dot too for reasons unknown. Cretinous little fooker.
My internet used to drop out, often due to a command sent from BT.Replaced their modem with a vigor 130 in bridge mode and it's been solid as a rock since

My favourite comment from Alexa so far...
Me : Alexa turn off lights.
Alexa : OK.
Pause
Alexa : I can shorten my replies to you. (Or something similar)
Surely "OK" is short.

Apologies if it's been covered in the previous 104 pages but I'm not reading it all!
Working from home & got our Echo playing the radio but it keeps dropping out with no warning, bloody annoying to say the least!
Is this a 'thing' or is there something in my setup? Currently given up with radio & have it playing a Prime Playlist, hopefully that'll keep working...

Don't forget to install the Alexa app and change the settings to not allow purchases. Daughter signed me up to Amazon music because she wanted to listen to Disney songs, she has only just turned 4. Also handy if you have friends who are coming round that think it would be funny to add a couple of Mac book pros into your amazon basket...

Not sure whether it was on here I read it but made me chuckle when I heard of someone driving around to a mate's house, knowing his mate was already out at work. He would shout orders of huge packets of bog roll through the letter box so his mate would arrive home with yet another multipack of loo roll on his doorstep and no clue as to what was happening.LordHaveMurci said:

The BBC iplayer skill and Deezer seems to work pretty well, no dropouts etc.
I was thinking of having electric shutters on my windows in my new house and was wondering if anyone had used Alexa capable switches for this?
the problem I see from my Googling is that the switches need to be 3 state items (up, down and neutral effectively) and I've not seen any switches that seem to have this functionality. Has anyone come up with a decent solution to this?

This is a Z-Wave device, so you will also need a Z-Wave compatible controller such as the Samsung SmartThings hub.
I have a SmartThings hub and some Fibaro relays to control lighting, and it all works well with Alexa. I haven't tried the blind controller yet.

Set the Echo to play "start of request" sounds (in the Alexa App, device settings - [echo] - sounds - request sounds) , that way it starts it's response with a 'bong' which is enough to wake the speaker, and then the actual response is audible.
