I was going to get my mum an android tablet for xmas but she also fancies a smart speaker for the kitchen (mainly for music) so I wondered if there was something that did both and spotted this which looks like quite a good setup

The only problem is that it runs Alexa and she's all set-up with google and often uses google music (via the family group sub).
I've never used Alexa before. Can you run google music via Alexa? A quick search seems that you can't? If that's true, anyone know of a way round this? (I can't find an equivalent tablet/stand set-up that runs google assistant).

I bought that for my son (albeit the 32gb version) and it's great and he loves it - quick, specd enough and a good bit of kit. I'd happily have one for myself
You should just be able to install the Google music app and everything for this (it'll be preinstalled anyway) - you can disable the action to enable Alexa when it's in the dock, so I'd just do that and use it as you want. The speaker's Bluetooth too if that helps
However, when it's in a case, you're not able to put it in the dock....

Cheers James. One thing she's keen to be able to do is talk to it to select what music is played so that's kind of what I'm asking (don't think I explained it too well) i.e. can you ask Alexa to play music via Google music?
A quick look online suggests not which would be frustrating seeing as it's an android tablet.

Is there a way to play music on an Echo without any lights flashing?
My son wants to listen to music at night, but finds the lights distracting.
Is there a Saab style night mode?

My mum had a question which I think I know the answer to - she wanted to know if she could turn the mic off by issuing a command.
I don't think you can and my suggestion may be to use wi-fi plugs to turn the device off at night and on again in the morning - but I don't know how to do that

- I know it's not a major thing, but it is for my mum...**

Mute button on the top kills the mic, there's a red light ring when it's active.I don't think you can and my suggestion may be to use wi-fi plugs to turn the device off at night and on again in the morning - but I don't know how to do that

I have the WEMO wifi plugs and you just set a rule for each one on the phone app. In this example my bedside lamp goes on on weekday mornings so I can see to get out out of bed. You could just set it to turn of in the evening and back on in the morning, but you might have to set each plug individuallyI don't think you can and my suggestion may be to use wi-fi plugs to turn the device off at night and on again in the morning - but I don't know how to do that

Anyone else noticed Alexa adding extra comments to its response. Last night I asked the time and it responded but finished with “I hope you had a lovely Monday”
Hopefully not connected to Skynet
Seems to only occur when first asked a question though , if you ask the question again then you dont get extra comment ( maybe it resets after a given period) Hopefully not connected to Skynet
Hopefully this is the start of some of the more recent US updates making there way to the UK !

We've been given an Echo Show 5. Cannot really see the point of it yet. Yes, It shows the weather or plays the news and but that seems to be about it.
Seems to have too much bass compared to Google. Best command is "Alexa, display off" as night mode is too bright for a bedside clock.
