The echo show 15 is a great bit of kit, still no idea where I'm going to actually put it, but it's on the kitchen counter for now (with a third party stand) until I work it out. It's intuitive and responsive but the speakers aren't as good at the show 8, but I expected that.
I still don't really know what I'll use it for, but it will get used
On the down side, the device has indeed been upgraded with Fire TV stuff and as a result it's lost some of the Android flexibility I was expecting to use it for and you can no longer side load things on to it, or install other things you might want to use it for - I wanted to put VLC on it, but you can no longer do that.
Also, the Netflix app doesn't have touch screen capability - Amazon support was worse than useless here, but it seems to be a "feature" and to use it properly, you need a fire remote. Nice (!)
It seems to have a micro USB plug in the back too, so a longer power cable shouldn't be ruinously expensive which is always good

I bought an echo dot 5th gen recently mainly to use as a BT speaker in my daughter bedroom, I couldn’t stomach the cost of another Sonos.
It’s cool that it has a temp sensor but it would be even better if I could ask Siri to tell me the room temp. I am guessing that those two ecosystems don’t allow such behaviour.
Also it would be great to turn off the announcement of “Bluetooth device connected” when I connect my phone. Is that possible?
Should I have bought the Sonos?

Well that was a quick relationship with the Alexa echo system. Going back to Amazon tomorrow. Load of rubbish.
When they work, they are great. Mine just don’t work often. I have 4 or so, all I want it to be able to select a group for music to play at the same and volume, but it seems an impossible task for them. Alarms confirm to be set, it’s in the log, but no alarm goes off.
Generally I just put music on one and hope for the best, I dont dare use them for anything else!

You played with it for 2 hours? What was so bad with it that you gave up that quickly?

See above. I cannot get it to stop announcing “now connected to X iPhone” when connecting to Bluetooth. It also makes a noise when disconnecting which is part of the same problem. I just want to be able to connect in silence and play music through it.
You realise you bought an Alexa device, not a Bluetooth speaker right? Although it can do that, it’s not really what it was designed for.I’m pretty sure all Bluetooth speakers make some sort of noise when you connect and disconnect from them.

Are you playing Spotify through your phone via Bluetooth? If so, just link Spotify to Alexa and ask it to play direct. thebraketester said:
