I find myself wanting one but as said, it doesn't seem to do anything that my smart tv doesn't. Except allow me to play stuff from my iPad on the telly. Do I need an apple TV for that, I'm not sure.

Define "stuff from my iPad".

As far as I know Apple TV is the only way of playing media direct from iPad/iPhone to the TV.

We currently have several 2nd and 3rd gen ones that we mainly use for home sharing (I have a tonne of TV shows and movies in iTunes). Is this any different / better on the new version?

The 1st World things that annoy me currently are:

The fact that TV shows list all the seasons for all shows in one massive list with no way to quickly jump to a letter and no ability to split the list so it's organised by show then season (like the 1st gen ones did).

The fact that I can't re-order or hide the types of content under my home share. I couldn't give a monkeys about playing music through my TV, same with podcasts. I want to be able to hide these and reorder the content sources so that TV and movies are listed first.

I want to have an easy way to get to recently viewed content - The current version shows recent items at the top but these just take me to that episode (which I've already watched) with no easy route to the rest of the episodes for that show.

The whole home sharing thing needs to be less buggy - ours is constantly loosing it's connection to iTunes, requiring either the Apple TV or iTunes or both to be restarted.

Is any of this improved with the new one? If it's more of the same I can't see me bothering with it to be honest.

Chromecast and other AirPlay devices like Raspberry Pi can be an option. Firestick TV can do it I expect.

Don't know what I am doing wrong but bought ATV4 a couple of weeks ago and not had chance to set it up until today. Got it out of the box, plugged into the amp and got the 'choose location' screen but the remote does nothing at all. No buttons work / touch pad is the same. Decided to put it on charge for 5 hours (perhaps I'm old school but surely this thing should give some indication of battery level / on charge) but still nothing.

Do I have a broken piece of kit?

Rather losing patience with Apple as it seems increasingly style over substance frown

Just done that. It seems the older apple IR remote doesn't work on my iPad though but apart from that it works great.

Well you will never guess what was in my Xmas stocking! Job done and added Plex, I have a much more efficient media player than my old mede8er.

But one thing is starting to bother me. I have sorted home sharing from the PC Itunes to the Apple TV (and I think Plex is slicker with music anyway) but why can I not sync iTunes to the Apple TV, so that I do not need the PC on all the time?

The Music app on the ATV says I do not have any music on this Apple TV? Can I sync from iTunes to the Apple TV?

You need to subscribe to Apple Music and/or iTunes Match for the music bit to work I think. That's how mine works anyway.

Bumping this as I'm considering upgrading from my ATV3. The two main draws of the newer model are compatibility with Apple Music and a native iPlayer app. Do the other channels, ITV etc, have native apps too?

Are there any other useful apps? I take it I'd still need something else to watch the Grand Tour on Amazon when that launches later in the year?

I've also just noticed that the audio from my current Apple TV goes to my AV receiver separately to the picture, so I'll need to see if I can tweak the settings to have both audio and video go down the HDMI cable.

To those that have upgraded - was it worth it?

On both atv 3 and 4, the hdmi cable carries audio and video. The 3 gives the option to use optical. The 4 does not.

Thanks, I'll just have to make sure my AV receiver plays ball with that, at least it will be easy to test before spending any money.

Had mine for a while now.
It's fantastic.

Switches the tv in/off automatically and can stream all my media natively from NAS disk using the infuse app (a bit like plex ) but doesn't need a server running so more like xbmc)

I don't have an aerial connected to the tv so I need to get it through Netflix or other online content for which the new Apple TV is great.

There are great pick up and play games too.

The remote is rubbish for password entry but the iPhone remote app works for that or one can dictate letters using Siri. A bit hit and miss for me.

Great piece of kit
