Unlocking an Iphone 4s
Discussion
My wife has just changed from her old battered 4s to a 6s.
Her old phone hasnt worked properly for a couple of years as it was assigned to an apple ID that I no longer have access to (This id was linked to an email address that I lost overnight without warning), this phone asks for the password for this dead apple ID , hence the fact its not worked properly with frequent pop ups etc
So Apple "could" wipe the phone for me but wont without proof of purchase, they can see on their system that the phones serial number is allocated to me and has only ever been allocated to me but will not help me, blaming the data protection act, I can appreciate that this could be used for stolen phones but we can prove that the phone isnt stolen
Vodafone have replaced their system and cannot provide me with a copy of the original contract/receipt that we took out about 4.5 years ago.
I know that I can do a factory reset but the phone will continue to be linked to a dead apple ID
Any ideas , someone suggested jailbreaking it . Due to the risk of their being data on there I wonder if the safest action would be to smash it up or see "Will it blend"?

Its not locked to a network , well it might be but thats not the problem the phone is working just fine and itunes and the app store is linked to my new apple id but the issue is the icloud
1) The apple id assigned to the icloud on the phone is no longer active
2) I cant log out of the Icloud as it wont accept the password because of 1
3) I cant do a full system reset as it requires a password for icloud
4) = bricked really , well useless to anyone else
I can see some "Icloud lock" unlocking services but they look dodgy

Have you tried connecting to a commuter and doing a full restore. That should solve the problem. 1) The apple id assigned to the icloud on the phone is no longer active
2) I cant log out of the Icloud as it wont accept the password because of 1

I have the sane problem with an Iphone 4. A friend gave it to me after his ex wife gave it to him. No problem for him, he's on the sane network but for me to use it it has to be unlocked, this can only be done by the original owner requesting it. We've asked her but she's not done it so the phone is now a door stop.
I think the op is referring to the id lock which to my knowledge cannot be removed if you don't know the original details, making it an expensive paperweight.
Regarding networks there are sims available that trick the phone into allowing another provider to be used, i tried one for a while and it did work ok.
