OK, changed my mind on the bigger hard drive thing, now want a NAS box for home use.

Anyone got any ideas on a good 'home' NAS box?

Why not just ressurect an old PC with Linux and attach a load of disks to that?

If only I had one...

Both my PCs are full or storage with no more IDE bus space - I would be taking drives out to put bigger one's in, plus they are a bit slow...

Thought a little NAS box would do the job, wondered if anyone had any experience...

NAS would do the job and loads of people sell them.

Why not get a PCI IDE controller though?

Thats another 4 HDD's in one machine.

Quite a lot cheaper as well and better performance.

I am running out of PSU connections and also would definitely get heat problems with 4 more HDDs in one of my little boxes (doubt they would fit anyway!!!)...

www.dabs.com do one by Buffalo which has up to 300Gb and it had a usb print server attached. You can also add another HDD to it. About £250 IIRC. Very tempted myself.

Since you did say personal, allow me to recommend LinkSys:

NSLU2 storage link for external usb 2.0 drives

Just hook this to your lan. Add an external USB 2.0 drive (Maxtor and SeaGate both make good ones), and you're done.

...If it where for business, I would go with Matt's suggestion of a Linux box just because of the additional configuration options...

I am using a Linksys EFG80. Great piece of kit. Dual 80GB drives that can be configured as 2 80s or 1 80 with the other as a scheduled backup.

Noisy but very robust Linux operating system with web config front end. Also a parallel port print server and DHCP server.

I bought a big server case for not much wonger and bunged all my drives in that. Nice RAID 5 array. The twin Opteron's + motherboard wasn't 'really' needed, but hey, how often are you going to build a server?

What RAID card are you using? I'm using a HighPoint 454 (5x 160Gb disks, RAID 5) and I'm having major problems with the array failing regularly (one random drive fails, but can be rebuilt).

Highpoint 1820A SATA with 4x 200GB's with SATA converters. I've got a 404 that ran them RAID 0+1 before with no problems. I was going to put 3x120GB's on it in RAID 5. I think the 404 and 454 are about the same? I'll let you know how I get on.

Adaptec are really the dog's proverbials when it comes to SATA RAID IMHO. Especially the 2410SA.

The box is hot swappable and fits in an enclosure the size of three cd-roms. Awesome piece of kit.

It's been my experience that most highpoint based systems last about 6 months and then there are major issues. Just my experience, everyone else could be trundling right along but I have had two of the things fail on me within a 12 month period, so I sourced the Adaptec solution instead. It's been going for over a year with no issues.

I have two home pc's (wify's lap top and my old desk top) both of which I want to back up.

Can i use one back up device to back up two pc's, either over the network or via direct usb connections?

vex...

That NAS Linksys storage link appliance above would be ideal for that. Just purchase a fairly large size hard drive to attach to it (depending on the amount of data you want to back up). Create two directories (eg: /MINE and /HERS) and then set up the backup software...

Done.
