Just got a DVD recorder to replace my VCR. Can play 4x +R disks after recording on my second DVD player but not 8x. Anyone know why?

Er, take that as a no then. Can't believe I've stumped the entire PH collective.

Normally the problems arise from the recorder not being able to record to an 8x disc and needs a firmware upgrade.

Never come across the play problem though, maybe needs a similar solution.

Google your DVD player type with 'help' or 'problem' and see if it's an already solved problem on another forum.

Thanks. The player is quite old so I may just get a newer one. How do you update the firmware on a DVD player anyway? Does it need to be attached to a computer or do you write the programme to a DVD disk?

I've never done a piece of hardware like a player but I would guess it's similar to any hardware attached to a PC, download the update to a disc (I would guess it's a self runner) and stick it in the player and hope there isn't a power cut. Should only take maybe 2mins though.

Check the website for the manufacturer of the player, you might be able to search the support section for updates or help.

You might get away with just changing the brand of media you use.

Certain players are just fickle about which media they will read.
