I have a Netgear DG834G router which runs the wireless network in my apartment. It is running WEP, MAC Address filtering and has the SSID broadcast switched off so I hope it is about as secure as it can be.

The trouble is that every 2 or 3 weeks it will have a bad day and keep crashing. The first I know is the lack of internet access or alternatively the phones in my house on the same ADSL ringing once.

Today it has been up and down like a whore's drawers, I reckon it has crashed about 40 times today.

When it crashes it doesn't lose any of its settings, soon reconnects and the wireless network soon comes back up. The difficulty I have is that the logs are cleared when it crashes and the internal clock resets itself to 2002 until it gets itself in order and corrects itself through NTP.

Anyone any ideas? I have checked and other than the unsupported beta version it is running the latest firmware.

FYI my ISP is Bulldog.

Phones ringing suggests that there is a significant glitch on the analogue line. I don't see how anything on the digital side could cause that so I don't think you are looking at a data comms or security issue, more likely a wiring fault or a duff handset/microfilter. The fault may not be inside your property. If it's happening fairly often, you may be able to track it down by elimination.

if it was the router it would be doing it daily/be repeatable etc.

Sounds like your line/the line to your house etc being tinkered with to me
