It's the latest version of network cabling. We did a whole house refurb so not really any additional cost to get that run as well as the re-wire plus my bro works for a cabling company. So in my eyes, completely necessary.

Good to hear. We too have a solid steel Hormann, but an access point just behind it. How long are you getting out of the battery?
The battery lasts between 6 - 9 months and then all you do is take it off the wall and plug it into charge overnight. Pop it back on in the morning and your all set.

Maybe, but for the chap that asked, probably not. Gigabit everywhere could get expensive.

Agreed, for non-techies or those on a budget, it's not required.

I agree. I don't understand it, therefore don't miss whatever it does!

I like the thought of lights following you around the house though.

It's a wired network. Cat 6 cable is certified to higher network speeds (1000 megabits/s) than Cat 5/5e (100 -> 1000 mb/s). Those higher speeds will only be realised if your whole network has devices that can support it, as data will only move at the speed of the slowest device.

You probably just use wifi and be done with it.

Good evening chaps...

I'm conducting some research into which areas of the country have the most technology. It would be great if you could just pop your address at the bottom of your posts. smile

Also, er, could you also say when you're going to be out over the next couple of weeks, just so that we can avoid those times if we need to ask any follow up questions?

In the interests of making sure we have complete data, please also give thought to including items of technology that you might otherwise not think to include. Things like alarms and CCTV cameras for example.

Lastly, have you thought to reply to the "what dog do you have" thread over in all creatures great and small? smile

Control4 Home Automation so that I can control my Home Cinema, TV's, Audio, Lights, Security, Electric Blinds and Aircon / Heating from Control4 tablet panels and my mobile!

Currently being installed. Cat6 is in, Control4 units going in and the rest will follow soon. New build house that I have taken over from a bust Developer so can finish it however I want.

A friend of mine has added controls that run a bath at a specific time! I'm not going that far though.

Indeed. I started to list out mine in my head and got to tens of thousands of pounds worth pretty quickly.

The only consolation (excuse?) for me is that I am an accumulator rather than a serial upgrader. I hate buying a really expensive item and selling it for a fraction of the original cost, so I try to keep things for as long as possible.

Just the stuff currently in active employ:

- TV
- PC
- Chromebook
- Xbox one
- Wii
- 5.1 audio system
- modem
- router
- wifi access point

Then there is the obvious fridge/microwave stuff

And a whole list of toys/non active stuff that isnt essential to my current life, a raspberry pi, dis-used file server, couple of network switches, windows tablet, two old phones, an xbox 360, a GBA, a PSP, a gamecube, a chinese amplifier.

Ive actually gotten rid of a LOT of crap i wasnt using anymore lately, the list isnt nearly as insane as i thought it would be
