Dropped a car in to have some body work done and had a Kia picanto hire car.

The next day, ore than 1 Kia Ads on my Facebook. Not even sure I said the name? Perhaps it might have picked something up via car bluetooth?
Could be Bluetooth beacons, Android phone with GPS on, Garage logged you in on a system that shares data perhaps, plenty of opportunities for linkage

In the last week I’ve started going out on my MTB a bit, first time for a long time. Today FB is advertising a mountain bike magazine...

I’m going to go with Google location data working out I’m cycling, but not very fast...

Or maybe Spring is just the time when businesses and organisations associated with outdoor pursuits put money into advertising?

Shame Signal hasn't taken off as its what Whatsapp is built on but not owned by FB.
Quite.
I refuse to have anything Facebook on my devices (FB, Instagram, WhatsApp) but it needs uptake from those that DO use these to move away to a an alternative. I did have WhatsApp prior to FB takeover, the chap that was head (or owner) wasn't happy with what FB were doing with it so left as I recall...

I think Apple could do this if it released an iMessage app for Android/Windows PC. Or it will need someone else (e.g. Signal) to get a comprehensive footing, which is hard.

On Sunday, missus was watching the film "about a boy" on netflix. I asked about one of the tracks playing to her and she said it was by BadlyDrawnBoy - had a couple of minutes convo about it and nothing else.

Next day, facebook and instagram had adverts telling me about the new BadlyDrawnBoy album.

Neither of us touched a device to discuss the artist - I can only assume that facebook received the notification that we were watching the film from netflix and figured we fell into his target audience (i don't, his music is generic wibble).

I think people will leave when Whatsapp starts serving up adverts within the message threads - it will happen at some point. I'm also not sure how sustainable it will be for FB to own and run these services without being broken up - they have too much power and control.

On the adverts note, I noticed yesterday that after every 2 posts that you scroll through on the app (Android) there is a sponsored advert, same on Storys on Instagram.

Insta is littered with adverts - I seem to get served up a lot of ads suggesting I follow young lads in their 20's who have Audi RS's of some kind and have succeeded in life by playing with FX trading.

TikTok is also full of those scammers too. They always have 'how to' books or a paid-for internet series to sell. Surely if you were that rich you wouldn't be arsed then making and trying hard to flog a stty little sideline.

i was going to make another topic but decided i'll post in here instead..

so i look through someones IG page that I follow, on one post they a bike frrom a certain brand, they've tagged the brand so i went on their page to have a look...

now whenever i scroll through, some of my sponsored ads on IG AND facebook are about that brand. very annoying.. how do you remove the link? or clear this history of targetted sponsord ads? not only that i get ads on IG about restaurants/independant takeaways that are nowhere near me (all up north, where as I'm in london)

Turn off WiFi and BT when out of the home/car.

And run Privacy Badger to block trackers.

And PiHole on the home network.

That knocks 95% of all the subversive crap on the head these days.

Holy thread revival Batman. Have this from a website not to far away...

I went to an Indian shop today, got speaking to the owner, who offered some Indian vegetarian food for takeaway. I asked about Dosa (like a filled pancake)... I haven’t mentioned dosa’s before (I live in Austria, not a huge Indian population here) or since...Just this once. got his just now on PH...

That shows the level of intrusion. Crazy.

PH is absolutely CRAMMED with trackers (pretty much spyware AFAIC) which, even when you seemingly opt out, you have to dig deeper to make sure they're not harvesting aggregated data from other sources, for instance. It's a massive business.

The shop owner probably looked up the dosa machine and you may have a connection to him based on location tracking.

to be fair they just have tons of slots for ads... they don't get involved in which ads are displayed. How else would they make any money... it's not like they can monetise the grumblings of a bunch of late middle aged men.

The new IOS version which requires you to opt in for ad tracking on each app is apparently seeing less than 5% of people agreeing to the prompts.

https://www.flurry.com/blog/ios-14-5-opt-in-rate-a...

The Zuckster will be down to his last hundred billion if this carries on.

lol. i guess in future this will transpire to be the reason why it's a bad idea to buy a device from a data company.
