PH is absolutely CRAMMED with trackers (pretty much spyware AFAIC) which, even when you seemingly opt out, you have to dig deeper to make sure they're not harvesting aggregated data from other sources, for instance. It's a massive business.

Wish Google would do that
They are.

End of this year 3rd party cookies on Chrome (the last browser to do it) will be gone, ending a lot of what this thread is moaning about (maybe, I'm sure something will come in that's similar, but less intrusive).

When I worked at Haymarket years ago, PH, and every other brand they had do indeed have a sales team selling against a bunch of old men, caravan enthusiasts, audiophiles, football etc etc. Much has changed in this industry, but I still imagine not every ad slot is filled programmatically (automated bidding of inventory vs direct buy). If you want to reach an affluent male audience I'd imagine PH is a fantastic place to do it, and I'm sure that if you're a brand that value that audience you can still ring whoever owns PH now and book your ads.

Unless they sort themselves out, Government's will step in and introduce legislation regarding privacy.
The will kill the golden goose.

I'm surprised somebody hasn't introduced a pay to use Internet service with zero advertising and zero tracking

Do you live on the north pole? Genuinely, where have you been the last 5 years?

Posted this in the Lounge as I don't really come into this forum, and it got moved and closed:

OK, bear with me with this as it was quite odd and in my mind far from a coincidence

Sitting in Dirty Dicks yesterday lunchtine talking to my mrs. and the thought of getting a turntable came into head and I asked if Richer Sounds was still nearby. I comically said "Yeah, I need to get a gramophone". This needed a bit of explaining and I described the Not the Nine O'Clock News sketch.

A little while passed and something popped into my head about the new Guy Richie film, so looked up the trailer.

The first thing under the Operation Fortune trailer was the hi-fi shop sketch. I showed my wife and was a bit of a eek moment.

Now bearing in mind my phone was in my jacket and not touched until I searched for the film trailer.

Thought about it after and thinking about Shazam technology (witchcraft app if you don't know what it is), it really isn't that hard to figure out.
I used all the names, NOT9ON, hifi-shop and gramophone. Not then difficult to work out the sketch. But I didn't ask Youtube to find it for me, it just did.

The algorithms work well finding new music, but finding stuff I've mentioned in conversation?

There was talk about Samsung tellies listening to people, so are the phones too?

So what else is my phone listening to?

Cool starry bra and all that, but it was just so odd. Surely not coincidental.

Anybody else had this? Is SkyNet starting?

Richer Sounds had closed down by the way.

So you techie people will have more idea about my phone 'listening' and linking to Youtube.

Had a strange one the other week, talking to a mate of mine over Whatsapp about cars, told him that that guy Shmee150 had bought a F1 chassis (mate of mine is into F1 car history), my mate didn't know who Shmee was so he opened Youtube on his phone (iPhone) to see it was already recommending him Schmee videos.

Could be a coincidence.

If YouTube recommended Schmee vids to me I'd delete it.

hehe

I can’t stand the chap either.

Just another reviewer.

On topic of suggestions being so good, part of me wonders if their algos are getting so good and they know ‘your type’ and what ‘your type’ are being exposed to and taking in, that they can target you the same.

Then I see Amazon advertising stuff to me that I’ve just bought… which makes me think they’ve all still just not got a clue but they keep selling it all as if they have.

Or they’re listening…

Or it’s just coincidence (likely)

I found this video interesting:

Currently the accelerometers can be used by apps without asking for permission. The means that even if you are not sharing your location companies like Facebook & Google could correlate your accelerometer data with someone nearby (e.g. travelling on the same bus) and use that to target ads based on location.
