Picked up an Iphone 7 Plus at John Lewis - the call sound quality seems weird - almost borderline like it's a whatsapp call or a speaker phone....is this a dodgy handset or have others found the same issue? The sound on my Iphone 6 was much more "normal"?

Thanks
In my experience call quality is almost always down to the network rather than the phone. Is it the same network/SIM etc? I also swapped from a 6 but noticed no real differece.

Is audio from apps etc. OK? This uses the ear speaker nowadays and although its output is a bit less than the main speaker if it is muffled or very attenuated compared to the main speaker then that might point to a problem.

Funny you should say that, but I noticed the same thing on my 7 Plus coming from a 6. It's not that I can't hear the other person properly. In fact, I can't put my finger on what it is. But it definitely sounds different. I did move from Vodafone to BT Mobile so just put it down to that, but it might be something to do with the handset. A quick google suggests we are not alone on this.

Could be a waterproofing membrane causing this?

My 7 sounds fine, just like my 6S.

Is anyone having trouble with muffled speech on their phone when it's in it's case? I've tried two wallet type ones now and the problem persists but when I use a cheap one that only covers the back it's fine.

Same. My 7 Plus, whether on EE or wifi calling, sounds the same or better than my 6 it replaced. Calls over bluetooth headphones also sound good.

apple sales drop for first time in 15 years, it was announced today. Tim Cook really has fked it. He's stted up the iPhone AND the MacBook.
Where was that announced?

This was on MacRumours a couple of weeks ago, and I thought they had been making noises about dropping sales for a while now?

I don't disagree about Cook not having the vision that Jobs had, but I'm not sure he's really 'fked it' yet. If Apple are to be believed they've had the most online orders for the new laptops ever, although that's probably less to do with the product and more to do with a lot of people that haven't been given the option of anything up to date for the last few years.
sorry I meant profit not sales

he has fked it. No new products to speak of, just unpopular and lacklustre 'enhancements' to existing ones.
It does seem a bit strange to me to make the point about declines with Apple on the eve of them launching two products which many people have been holding back on until launched - the iphone 7 and macbook pro ranges. It will be more interesting reading how Apple are doing in one or two quarters' time when their marketing positioning will be better understood. Samdung's massive own goal with the note 7 may well skew short term figures in Apple's favour whilst Google's Pixel will be interesting to see the impact of.

I have noticed this but I don't make or take a lot of phonecalls. I've got a 7+.

What it sounds like to me is digital compression. As if the call is being sent at a lower bit-rate. If anyone remembers the earlier days of MP3s where things were encoded at 128k with the dreaded 'joint stereo'...and you'd get those wishy-washy underwater hi hats. So higher frequencies are being affected as they are not being encoded properly, and you get problems with sibilants and it sounds as if the person you are talking to is distant from the phone they are using... But it's not all the time and it does not bother me as I've mainly got this to do other stuff on than make calls!!

I think I'm going to get a 6S. Should be a few decent bargains around for that I'm hoping. Likewise anyone looking for a handy 20 quid for theirs let me know smile

who has a good high data deal that does not cost the earth?

was going to get one from Three on Friday, but their 30GB special ended Thursday and the prices are now £5 to £7 above where they were pre 30GB special.

Ah, my question was poorly phrased.

I meant with a iPhone 6s or 7 included.

Yeah. Pay for phone upfront then get a SIM only. Works out cheaper.
