I have a 2013 Haswell rMBP which was top spec at the time... top CPU, 16GB, 1TB flash etc.
For a three year old device it still seems decent especially after wiping it recently for the first time and putting a clean install of Sierra on.
Am still interested to see what comes out next and what sort of gains are made with performance - I use mine predominantly with Lightroom and 50MP photos from my DSLR so more CPU grunt, 32GB RAM and even faster storage would be welcome.
You're actually looking for GPU upgrades if working with Lightroom, the CPU isn't doing much there. For a three year old device it still seems decent especially after wiping it recently for the first time and putting a clean install of Sierra on.

It will be interesting to see what they come out with in terms of the integrated + discrete GPU setup in the device I have. I'm a bit out of touch with CPU developments but I presume even if with big gains in the Kaby Lake 4-core iGPU capabilities Apple will still include a dedicated GPU in the higher end units. Maybe I should just buy a 5K screen for my desktop and stick a proper GPU in that.
Integrated GPU's are always improving, but for any media work you wanted a Discrete GPU really, as the programs can all take advantage of how much better they are than a CPU for that kind of work.Jiebo said:

There are more important things going on in the world than Apples bloody update for a computer.
Indeed there are. Even more important than wasting electrons posting on a thread you have no interest in. There are more important things going on in the world than Apples bloody update for a computer.
Perhaps go and post in a more worthwhile thread instead. Or maybe go and do some real charitable deeds rather than hang around a car forum?

Anyway, back, I cannot see much in the way of revolution in any potential new MBP. I wonder if we might move to longer refresh cycles of hardware and longer support cycles as OSX progresses to smaller incremental moves....

It would make a lot of sense. Same with the phone line up.Anyway, back, I cannot see much in the way of revolution in any potential new MBP. I wonder if we might move to longer refresh cycles of hardware and longer support cycles as OSX progresses to smaller incremental moves....
Problem is, as a society we've become driven by "new shiny" and anyone not conforming to at least annual updates is regarded as staid.

I find it very interesting. Usually they have done quite a few smart things, then they things that others have been doing for a while, rename it and call it innovation. Or cheating, however as I like what Apple does it is something I will be looking out for if the specs are right. I have not bought a mac laptop before but might be tempted, along wit the release of the new MacBooks, there will be other hardware upgrades and Apple TV is one where I hope the go 4K, if that happens I expect 4k compatibility across other devices as the norm, could be very interesting. There are a whole raft of reasons why people talk about this. There are more important things going on in the world than Apples bloody update for a computer.
I'm tempted to get a new mac in the next year or so (excess funds in ltd company) but at a loss with what to do. I currently have a 2012 MacBook pro 15' non retina, its a bit weighty but that's ok because it very rarely leaves the house. I love still having the disc drive (I have lots of cd's).
now my options are-
sell the MacBook pro (anyone any idea how much I'd get??) and buy a new 15" MacBook when they are released.
or keep the MacBook pro incase I need the portability and buy an iMac, which would be good for photo processing etc... on the bigger screen

Easy sell the old Pro, you'll probably get about £300-£400 for it. Buy the new one if\when it gets released and then by yourself a separate larger monitor\display and a docking station. You can then just plug your new Macbook Pro into your monitor when at home, best of both worlds. Only problem is Apple have discontinued their 27" monitor, rumours are a new 5k monitor is on the way but when is anybodies guess as usual.now my options are-

The only flaw I see in that plan is that the 15" MBP isn't really all that portable. A new MBP with external monitor would be my suggestion, especially as with Thunderbolt/USB-C you can dock with one cable.now my options are-

I didn't think my MacBook pro would be worth 3-400! might have to look into changing it now!
I agree the current 15" is exactly the most portable machine, but its just heavy, I wouldn't be needing this with me every day on a commute or anything like that. just easier to transport about than a desk top!

My MBP needed a new logic board and my local non-Apple but Apple certified centre did it in a week by bringing it in.
An Apple Store turned around a logic board and screen replacement all under the SOGA in 24 hours for an Macbook Air a couple of years ago.My MBP needed a new logic board and my local non-Apple but Apple certified centre did it in a week by bringing it in.
This was an improvement over their blunt denial for new graphics card in a G5 tower some years ago. Due to a known thermal problem where the machine wouldn't boot as the graphics card was too cold to function. You had to use a hairdryer and warm up the card before booting!
As for Linux, dear me no. Its got nothing to with that Linus chap. I've had the 'joy' of OSX since the 1st betas and I'd still prefer those buggy as hell versions to Linux as a desktop. You will find some linux device drivers can be pulled into osx as ktext files, but you'd be running a hackintosh for that sort of usage.

My own 2012 MBP Retina is starting to get a bit long in the tooth and I've been eagerly awaiting news of new ones. Fingers crossed for a pre-Christmas release.
I'm thinking the same about my late 2011 MBP. Almost bought a retina mid last year with a cinema display, in a way I'm glad I didn't but also wish I did!Might increase the RAM and put in a new HDD (again) instead to keep it ticking along for another few years.

C'maaaaan Apple!! I got real itchy feet this week, if Dell had included their XPS range in their "5 days of deals" this week I'd have just bought that instead.
Just give us some new rumours at least!!
I used their online sales chat facility and was offered 7% off of one without trying. I reckon you could get 10% off one of the new ones...Just give us some new rumours at least!!
