My 2010 iMac has really started to slow down over the last few months, I think it may be time to reinstall macOS from scratch. Hopefully it isn't the HDD on its way out.
I agree with the views on thinness - the MacBook is incredibly thin, the MBP doesn't need to be thin at the expense of power and connectivity.
Make sure you are using Time Machine to back up your iMac onto an external drive because if it is the HDD on the way out you really don't want to wait till that fateful day when it won't boot up!I agree with the views on thinness - the MacBook is incredibly thin, the MBP doesn't need to be thin at the expense of power and connectivity.
Apple make it very easy to reinstall the OS on your iMac, you can either reinstall with the version it originally came with, or install the latest OS, this is all down via download from their servers. What they don't tell you is just how long this will take which was overnight in my case but at least it all worked and I'm now running El Capitan.
More info on how to reinstall the Mac OS on the same Mac can be found at: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204904
CAUTION: BACKUP ALL FILES ONTO ANOTHER HDD BEFORE YOU START THIS PROCESS JUST IN CASE!

I'm definitely interested to see what comes out.
Not sure I'd want to go with a first gen of a redesign and I suspect prices will jump significantly, but my Macbook is now approaching 10 years old and is becoming less useful by the day.
That's good going! Is it still on its original price? Not sure I'd want to go with a first gen of a redesign and I suspect prices will jump significantly, but my Macbook is now approaching 10 years old and is becoming less useful by the day.

Surely this is akin to waiting for 720p, no 1080i is coming soon, no 1080p, no 4k.... no.... If you took that attitude you'd never buy anything techwise.
Just buy something that is there now and use it and then upgrade with something else which is actually available.
Not really, the Macbook Pro design hasn't had a significant update for 4 years now, apart from the Retina display last year, that is an eternity in the tech world. What's worse is it still carries the premium price tag to boot. Using your analogy that's like paying £1500 for a 720p TV when other manufactures are selling 4k curved screens for the same price. If you're happy to pay £1000+ for 4 year old tech then fill yer boots. Just buy something that is there now and use it and then upgrade with something else which is actually available.

Well, apart from the CPU updates, the HDD updates and the GPU updates, but yes apart from that it's all the same....
The Haswell chipset used in the 15" is 3 years old, the Broadwell in the 13" is 2 years old, with the release of Kaby Lake, we are now 2 generations beyond Apples latest Pro chipset. Some people might be happy with that, it seems a lot on here aren't which is why people are waiting for the new one. I'd be gutted if I dropped £1500 on a Macbook Pro, only to see them release one 3 times as powerful next month for the same price. Yes tech moves on all the time but there is often a right time and a wrong time to buy during an upgrade cycle and all pointers are indicating we are very near the end of the current cycle. As another poster posted above, most of the Mac websites are recommending a do not buy policy for the current one.

I've stuck in an SSD, 4gb RAM and replaced the fan at a total cost of around £150, but that's it since Jan 07 and it's never failed on me. A few tweaks to minimise animation and clutter, overclock the GPU and run the fans a bit faster and it absolutely flies for everyday stuff, but Snow Leopard is losing support and it'll struggle with anything more than basic photo editing so I really do need an upgrade.
It's a shame modern Macs can't be user upgraded and fixed in the same way. I'll probably swap to a 3 year or so upgrade cycle rather than run until it dies.
I will see what the new Pro is like and then possibly decide to go back to windows with a Surface Pro.
Those rumour website are full of BS tbh. They've been reporting a new Macbook Pro announcement since the beginning of the year which have all turned out to be nonsense so I've given up reading them now. I'll believe it when I can actually go into an Apple Store and see a physical one.
