Battery shutdown on iPhone 6s
Discussion
It's weird, I'm not convinced the battery is degraded necessarily, I just think the phone doesn't know so just turns itself off. Sometimes I can get it started again with some battery life left. Other times dead as a dodo. I like apple stuff but having to keep your phone plugged in is just annoying.
I explained to the apple guru on the live help part of their website that I had done a backup and refresh and am running latest iOS. He did a diagnostics check which showed the battery as ok. All he could come up with was a reset pressing home and power button together. I've done that countless times but he stressed to do it when plugged in on charge and battery indicator shot up. That was around lunchtime and I'm down to 66% now. I'm waiting to see when it decides to shut down this time.

It happens because the software which is supposed to measure how full\empty the battery is has got it's knickers in a twist so it's reporting the battery as having 40% charge when it doesn't or vice versa. This usually happens because most people don't charge their phones fully according to the instructions in the manual when they first get them as they are too impatient and can't wait those few hours to switch it on and have a play, I did exactly the same thing myself. If your phone is not on the list to be replaced you can still fix this by just conditioning your battery properly which also resets the battery percentage app to show properly.
There are 2 issues ongoing. The first is a real battery issue which is resolved by replacing the battery (or phone). This issue had a limited impact based on number of handsets.
The second issue, that Apple are very aware of, is that one of the IOS updates "broke" the battery management and they have not been able to fix it. They can't admit to it because the negative publicity would destroy their stock. And, everyone would be demanding a replacement which will have the same issue. There have been several minor updates to the current rev IOS but none have been able to repair what they broke.
The hope is that with the next update this will quietly go away.

Are the instructions for that somewhere in this thread?chrisga said:
Since downloading and installing IOS10.2.1 the other day on to my 6, the battery meter and random shutdowns has dramatically improved. Last shutdown was at 6% which I can live with. After installation I restarted the phone. Anyone else noticed improvements?
Same here. Although it's been bad today with it shutting down at 27% and then once plugged in showing 1% then jumping to 33% within seconds. If you're bothered, phone Apple, they can run diagnostics on your phone and tell you how many charges you've been through. They warranty up to 500 charges, ,mines done 1300ish so the fact it's still lasting is quite good according to them. I still think batteries should last much longer and be guaranteed for more than 500 charges though.
Got gifted a 6s from my brother when he got the 7 on release and its safe to say he hammerd the phones battery, he is the type to always be on his phone so its had a hard year.
The battery life was terrible, an hour browsing the web would take it from say 90% to 20-30% easily. Apple replaced the battery for free seeing as it qualified and now its superb.

Apple says iOS 10.2.1 has reduced unexpected iPhone 6s shutdown issues by 80%
The shut down issues they refused to acknowledge?
