All was working the other day, we could connect to our server via VNC.

But today we get this error message:

cannot connect to server;..NOT AN RFB SERVER

What does this mean?

I did a check on our IP and the only display that is responding is 0. Does that mean anything?

We can ping the server and get a response.

RFB is the protocol that VNC uses for connection which is a basic graphical connection working at the frame buffer level for access. It sounds like the VNC service has become damaged and needs reinstalling.

Default port for connection to VNC is 5900 and is known as display 0.

Try re-installing.

it could be that VNC isnt loaded.

When you installed it, did you tell it to 'run as a service'

Depending on what OS you are running, you could try checking Services, to see if VNC is listed.

Or, just check that the ICON is in the tray in the bottom right.

If not, you can start VNC server by clicking on the icon in the VNC program group on the start menu.

I doubt its a firewalling issue if its over the LAN, but you could try changing the Display port and trying to connect again on the new port.

Thanks for the contributions.

It turns out a collegue had installed some anti-trojan software which had adjusted the server's registry.

We re-installed VNC as recommended and all is okay.

Thanks.
