What idiot decided to attempt to force users. that their brouser ain't good enough to surf their sites.
Anyone else encountered similar sites attemting to block certain brousers - perhaps we should start a name and shame on this thread, if you've had similar probs post the offending sites up here so we can all give them a miss. If they don't want our custom then we can go to those site that do

I remember seeing a condescending message like that about "being in the slow lane" and needing to upgrade my browser. I can't upgrade my browser because the one I have is the newest one that my operating system will support. I can't upgrade my operating system as the one I'm on is the newest that my old Mac will run reliably on. I can't upgrade my Mac because I'm not rolling in fking money. It would help if the people who wrote these messages were a little more respectful.

It's an early 2008 MacBook Pro running 10.6.8. This is regarded as the optimum OS for this machine. Anything newer will, apparently, experience glitches and also various software I have, including Adobe Creative Suite 5, will start to play up too. Of the browsers I have installed, Firefox (48.0.2) seems to work fine though it's not the most up-to-date version, ditto Chrome, Safari is pretty unusable. I don't have circa £2k for a new MacBook Pro, nor do I have £60/month to spank on Adobe Creative Cloud which I'll be forced onto if my CS5 doesn't work properly on a new Mac.MitchT said:

Maybe your profile's old, but as a freelance graphic designer I'd have thought that was essential (and down in the noise, cost-wise)?If your Mac's lasted nine years and is still a decent tool for earning money that's frankly amazing.
Also, there are many cheaper alternatives for replacement than a new MBP. Dell XPS starts at under £900, or just get a mac mini and a keyboard/monitor.
It annoys me as well, and it particularly annoys me when they stick a patronising message up about joining the modern world or whatever. I don't want to have to learn a whole new menu structure and find a load more equivalents to the things I've been using for years. It wound me up no end when Gmail started moaning about the IE version I was using on XP - if the new version of Gmail doesn't support it, redirect me to the old version and I'll accept I don't have some of the new features that you've added and probably didn't know about so won't miss.

I've only just set up and am currently lining-up some part time work to help keep my savings intact while I get up to speed, but of course a comprehensive upgrade will happen as soon as it can be done without crippling me financially. In the meantime, CS5 is more than adequate as print ready artwork is all sent in PDF format these days and digital output is all PNG, JPEG, etc., so it doesn't require the latest software. If anyone needs to send me anything created in a newer version they can always save it in a format that CS5 can read - InDesign and Illustrator both allow this and Photoshop doesn't seem to mind. Finally, a lot of freelance work is based in company's offices using their gear, so that's not a concern.silentbrown said:

It still seems to be able to take everything I can throw at it.silentbrown said:

Wouldn't touch Windows with a barge pole. Fine if you've got dedicated IT support but at home - no way when my livelihood depends on having a functioning computer. Both my mum and my OH have Windows laptops and seem to constantly struggle with updates that immobilise the whole machine, software they install which seems to manage to screw up some of their existing software, internet inexplicably behaving like dial-up ... I could go on. Plus, I use Logic Pro too which is Mac-only, so I'd have to spank about £500 on Cubase to replace that. I'd prefer not to go down the Mac mini route as a laptop is useful for taking my music into studios for mixing/mastering/etc. after I've initially produced it at home.Edited by MitchT on Thursday 19th January 11:51

What idiot decided to use images in a post - how the hell are those of us still using the Lynx text-mode browser supposed to make sense of that?Surely they're having a laugh:-

Ah. Misunderstanding on my part based on the age of your Mac and Adobe CS software.MitchT said:

That's your decision. I don't know what Windows versions you've had to deal with, but Windows 7 and 10 have been bombproof for me. Even 8 is OK once you get past the terrible UI. Logic Pro is a good reason to stay with Mac, but you'll probably want to splash out on an upgrade for that on a new Macbook too...
Here's the analogy:-
You attempt to enter your local supermart dressed in last years Blue Jeans and a 'T' shirt - when
the store security guard tells you 'you ain't allowed in the store dressed like that'??
He tells you 'you need to be wearing 'this years colours' Jacket, shirt and tie'!!
Well faced with this what would you do?
Of course you go to the rival supermart who welcome you with open arms however you dress.
as the thread title ' they cannot be serious'.
NOBODY TELLS ME - THE CUSTOMER - HOW I SHOULD DRESS
Here's a few more sites who don't want my custom
and as THE customer - I'M ALWAYS RIGHT' - and the idiot/s who decided I wasn't welcome unless dressed to their spec -
ought to sacked IMMEDIATELY
