I'm now out of contract, and they want £59 a month for just the M125 broadband. No TV or anything.....

Called up and they can suddenly do £34 a month on an 18 month contract, which still seems high. I told them I'll think about it. The person I spoke to called me by about 5 different names during the call, so I think I got the bottom of the barrel.

My Mum just got M350 for less than that.

Problem is they're my only option for fast internet in my area.

Do I simply cancel and then wait for the (hopefully) inevitable phone call a few days later offering a better deal?

What if they just call my bluff? the only other internet package in my area is 10mb, presumably delivered by carrier pigeon hehe

How strong/fast is your 4/5g signal?

It does make it a little bit more difficult is there is no competition in the area, and VM will presumably know that.

If it were me, I'd put in a cancellation request anyway, make sure they agree exactly what date you'll be cut-off (should be 30 days notice), and if they haven't called back by, say, day 28, then call them back and cancel the request before they actually cut you off.

Good luck, and hopefully you'll end up with a much better price than currently quoted!

I pretty much always have 5G On my phone, and a quick speed test shows it at 100MB?

Sign up with someone else and let them know you are leaving.
You will eventually likely get a phone call from someone on a random mobile number able to offer you a much better deal.
(NB - this is only from my personal experience!)

I ended up with;
Full TV inc sports & sky movies
Netflix
Gig broadband

..............................
£56 a month.....

I am still in contract (no price rise oddly), but YouFibre sent me a deal I cannot ignore. Currently just have 1Gb broadband from Virgin, but YouFibre are now available where I live and are offering 1Gb (900mb effectively) download AND upload. For £1 a month for 9 months (because I am still in contract), and then £29.99 after.

I will want the static IP (£5 a month) to get round the cgnat they use, but that's still £12 a month cheaper than Virgin, after the £1 deal ends. Really worth running side by side to test and compare, but it really is the symmetrical upload/download that has drawn me to it (backups, streaming while traveling etc).

Install is the end of May, no rush, but might be great.
They get some good reviews as well.

I wasn't aware 5G broadband was even a thing I'll admit. I can supposedly get a 150mb package with Three, for £17.50 a month
if you can get a 5g signal the Three 5g router is a good tool in your arsenal to go into battle with Virgin.

you can have the 4g/5g router from Three for 28 days and if you decide you don't like it you call them up and tell them you don't want it after all. they send you a FOC return bag and it costs you nothing.

I'm on the fringe of the 5g signal area but the router worked well although I had to place it by an upstairs window (any side of the house was ok) for it to work reliably on 5G and then it provided over 400 download (much less upload) otherwise it would only connect on 4g but even then it would get 50-60 download.

as said earlier, you can keep it for 28 days at no cost so during that time you argue with Virgin and depending upon what they offer you keep or return the 5g router.

other networks also provide 5g but I don't know if they have the same offer as Three. you can check 5g signal strength at cellmapper website.

Is there a way of cancelling that isn't by 'phone? I'm away travelling at the moment and my 30 days notice period starts tomorrow but after today I won't be contactable until next Monday the 15th, I'd really not want to be on long 'phone calls whilst on the move.

My price went to £59 for M125 broadband only.

First call, they could do it for £34.

Then after a WhatApp chat, they could do it for £37 but I MUST have the 02 SIM, which they couldn't remove, but that was "worth" £6 a month.

Second call, it's now £28, which I accepted, and then suddenly he said oh I made a mistake I can't do that, it's £34.

I said I'm cancelling, to which he transferred me to someone else, and the price is now £28.

At this point they were just winding me up, so I've given 30 days notice.

I'll see if I get a call in the next few days with a better deal of some sort to try and entice me back.

In the meantime, I can get a 4G plan with Three, and I'm right on the edge of the 5G coverage.
Three are doing the 4g Plus hub, first 3 months free, and then £20 a month afterwards, so I'll give that a go.
Can always use that for a time and then re-join virgin as a "new" customer in the future. As suggested above, if Virgin do call, then I can just return the Three kit.

Why is this stuff so annoying????

I'm not sure of VM's strategy of associating the feeling of being annoyed or pissed off with them is their intention but I suspect every poster on this thread and everyone who reads this thread even if they're not a member of PH feels the same. Marketing at its worst.

This is what I'm looking at too. Before switching to Virgin in December 2021 I used a Huawei B818 and a Three unlimited data SIM and it was just about OK (8-10 meg download) but I understand now that I'm also on the edge of 5G coverage so will give it a go again. My Virgin bill is due to rise from £25 to £51 for M125 on 13th June.

My deal had a O2 sim included to get the price at £X a month.
Off the record i was told you could cancel it (directly with O2) and still keep the deal....
Took about 10 minutes!
Love distance selling regs.....

It's a very valid point Mr Hoofy. I'm sure though that other Broadband companies have ex customers who were just as unimpressed with them. Virgin however seem to have a knack of really annoying people.
When I had decided to leave last year their total inability to recognise that I was genuinely going was revealing. The same applied to their sudden ability to reduce prizes down to a third or so to desperately keep you.
For me leaving was one of the better decisions I took last year.

Now that you have cancelled, just get your partner to sign up in their name online to get a better deal.

.....can you do that?
I assumed it was linked to the address/household rather than the person.

My M250 was £24.25 a month
A month or so ago I had a letter saying it was going up by £7
I called & there was an option to decline the hike.
But they took £7 off, so now £17.25 until Dec, when it ends
Plus a bit of credit for that month

City Fibre digging up my road now
Openreach line unusable here

When Virgin hike it in Dec i’ll switch to City Fibre or 3uk 5g

I've just got the email, £7 increase on my £15 package, nearly 50%! Will be on the phone again tomorrow, they taking the pi55
I just got off the phone to Virgin, went straight through to "if you're thinking of leaving us", it took them 30+ mins to answer but finally got through to the Philippines. My £7 rise has been cancelled and 'Johny" was adamant I will now only pay £8/m for the rest of my 13 month contract, he repeated this three times. So either I'm a very special customer or he has made a cock up, or he is wrong and the £7 will go back on the £8 in May taking it back to £15/m.

Let's see what happens in May.
UPDATE. I was correct, after two bills at £8/m I've just had the May bill arrive, the £7 price rise has kicked in, so I'm back to £15/m. 'Johny' gave me the wrong info.

Same - not unexpected.

My bill is now £37 which has taken 3 different discounts totalling £43 to achieve. It looks like 2 of these discounts run until Dec 2023 at which point I have to go through the process once again frown
