Virgin Media - Retention Deals?
Discussion
Guys I'm not techy so bare with me. We're due for a contract renewal with Sky in a couple of weeks and planning on removing their Broadband as it's utter ste and not fit for purpose. We don't hammer data in our house as we're not gamers, so it tends to be Netflix, Prime etc when not using Sky so we don't need ultrafast broadband, but something that is quick and reliable with no buffering would be ideal.
How compatible are the broadband providers with SkyQ? I've heard some horrendous stories about Virgin customer service so ideally want to avoid them, but up to now they've had the best broadband available so a bit of a pickle. I like the sounds of the Three deals listed above but can only get 4G in our area, is that suitable?
Any help appreciated

There is a good thread on Three 4G here, its worth a look:-
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
Are you on Three at the moment?
As a worst case scenario create a hot spot with your mobile and test Netflix etc with your TV/Firestick etc connected to it
With a dedicated 4G router it will be better,, but all depends how good the 4G service is in your area

Thanks Hedobot. I'm not with Three at the moment and never have been previously but there is one of their shops near my office so I'm going to go in at lunch time for a look. Good idea with the hotspot off my mobile, will try that later as 4G does tend to be good in my house and often quicker than wifi.https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Firstly your Sky broadband is the same broadband that everybody apart from Virgin sells. So if your connection is rubbish, the chances are it will still be rubbish whether you are with Sky, BT, Plusnet, TalkTalk or anybody else because it all comes in through the same wire. So to get a measurably better service, you need somebody who runs a new connection, which is Virgin or one of the new fibre providers. Also, don't go on internet hearsay or review sites to rate customer service, you only ever get people with axes to grind. Personally I've been with Virgin (previously NTL) for 20 years and both the quality of the connection and the customer service (not that I have had to call them often) has never been short of excellent. How compatible are the broadband providers with SkyQ? You don't say what package you're on or what speed you're getting, or whether you are using Wifi or a wired connection. All of these will have a bearing on whether your problem is at the provider side, or whether it's actually an issue inside the house.
I have no experience with SkyQ but this https://bigtechquestion.com/2020/09/06/broadband/w... indicates that it will work fine, with the caveat as noted that the boxes won't work as wifi repeaters with any other provider. This may or may not be an issue for you.
If you are light users then 4G will be fine, depending on how strong and reliable your signal is. Just make sure you get a contract with enough data as if you frequently use streaming services you will be shocked at how much data you get through.

I had the call back this morning agreeing a new deal after I cancelled yesterday on the 0800 number. New deal is less than I was paying before and before the price rise.
Just be careful if...........................If on your existing plan you had a discount applied to it for example you had rung up previously and complained of a past increase. Thery said no problem Mr Dontfollow we can do you a deal for £40 instead of £50 that plan will run for 18 months. When you look at the details you see it has a discount applied of say £12 to run to April 2022
You get a new price increase letter of say £4 a week ago. You ring them up and say not happy. They then find a deal that brings it down by £15 and you are very happy you are paying £15 less
Just check that the figure doesnt include the old discount of £12 that will run out in April. Meaning that in April up it goes by £12
Sounds a bit complicated but i have seen someone fall foul of it
I just called and got an automated response offering £5.something off for the next 6 months and no new contract. That gets rid of the price rise, so happy enough with that outcome for zero hassle.
We've got Cityfibre in the street now, so in due course I want to seriously look at just dropping home phone and TV, and doing everything over fibre.
gave my cancellation notice yesterday and got a call today from a nice chap from retentions
got offered the same contract ( 350 Meg + Big Sport bundle (bt Sport) minus the sim card for £5 less which ok in todays market... plus will get an O2 sim separately which will boost internet speed to next tier M500

0800 0522001 which was referenced on the webpage about the increase. I picked the "thinking of leaving"
option and it offered the discount straight after that.

I got the £3.25 increase too despite being 13 months into an 18 month contract. Coincidentally got a flyer from Vodafone offering 500mb for £30/Month.
Called Virgin to see if anything could be done but seems can’t so cancelled and will give Vodafone a go
This is what I'm thinking of doing, got the VF flyer this week and looks a decent package, FTTP too. Looking online the VF customer service seems to be dreadful but how much worse than VM can it be?Called Virgin to see if anything could be done but seems can’t so cancelled and will give Vodafone a go

As a Vodafone mobile customer I’ve had to contact them a few times and found them reasonable enough. No better or worse than anyone else. So that wouldn’t put me off. I signed up for Vodafone but just got the retention call from Virgin. Offered me £25/month.

They did that to me - low price but it ran out in 2 months and went to an expensive rate. This was because the exiting discount only had 2 months left so the headline price was low. Check the small print in the contract for any price changes or discounts running out.If on your existing plan you had a discount applied to it for example you had rung up previously and complained of a past increase. To be fair a call back explaining this and they sorted it so that it was the same discounted price for the whole contract, but then I was still in the 14 day cooling of period.
Key thing - check your contract for the full details and get it sorted quickly.
