Now that the S8 has been around a while, what are the chances of a decent discount on SIM only when black Friday comes around?
I bought mine a few months ago from eGlobalcentral for less than it can be had in the UK; it is selling there in Dual Sim (the reason I jumped from Apple) for £446 on a Black Friday deal. Delivery process was good. I've bought cameras from there too in the past; Canon 5D M2, 7D Mk2, never an issue.

Thanks, but I'm happily posting this on my S8 from the mobiles.co.uk deal above that was on for BF.

A couple of things on settings...

Is there any way to change the font size of home screen icons?

In the navigation bar settings, according to YouTube, there should be colour options, and a colour picker to pick what you want for the background colour. On mine, I've got various pale off white colours, and no picker. Are the videos old and an update has removed the option, or is there something odd going on? It's the same on the standard theme and a downloaded dark theme.

Seems a little laggy when scrolling between apps etc. Unlocking is a little slow at times too.
There's a fix hidden in developer options for this.

Find out how to enable developer options on your phone, usually click on build number 5 times.

Then there is 3 options that are set to 1x

Windows animation scale
transition animation scale
animator duration scale

Set these to 0.5x or even off, I have mine off.

Awesome, thanks for that!

The only issue I now have, is lack of an 'unread' badge on the GMail app. The only solutions I've seen require a new loader (which I don't want to do at the moment).

I've gone back to the Samsung Email app .. it does this, and seems nicer than Google.

Well, I wasn't expecting to buy a phone over the weekend. Been super happy with my Nexus 5X but keeping an eye out for random phone deals since it had a bootloop issue (fixed by LG, but not sure when it'll do it again!).

I've ended up with a stupidly good deal to switch over to Vodafone from TalkMobile, so there's a shiny S8 arriving soon.

Choosing a case is proving a bit tricky, primarily as there is so much choice. With the 5X there weren't that many options as it doesn't seem to have been all that popular. I've seen Spigen and Nillkin cases recommended here, and Spigen have an extensive range of options. I'd like a decent amount of protection as I try to keep phones going for as long as possible (I was using a Galaxy SII until early last year!) so I suppose that rules out a basic skin. Am I right to think that any case will still leave the edges vulnerable?

If anyone has any recommendations I'll be all ears. Cheers.

Luke.

I have a spigen slim armour case and a screen protector . about as good as you can get without making it overly bulky.

I've got one of these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B071S818SD/ref...

I hate phone cases, and generally don't use them. However, having smashed the screen once already I thought I should get something - and this is actually very good.
It does protect the sides - and although it's not really designed to protect the screen - the plastic top / bottom bits do sit a fraction higher than the screen, so if you drop it face down I don't believe the screen would touch. I've dropped my phone a few times since buying it and so far it's not had any damage.

Is there any way to stop music resuming after a phone call?

I'm finding this really annoying. I often listen to music at work (office) with plugged in headphones. If I get a call, I obviously unplug the headphones and take the call.
At the end of the call, my phone starts blaring out music on its speaker - which is not a good thing.

Is there a way to stop this?

I had Tasker on my S5 and although I've installed it I haven't used it yet on the S8 - I guess I may be able to come up with something using that if I need to. But I really would prefer a simpler solution.

ETA : Have re-enabled Tasker and knocked up a quick profile - when headphones are disconnected, I-Player Radio, Amazon Music and Play Music apps are all killed. Tried simply sending Stop to the Apps but it didn't work (maybe because they had already paused when the phone starts ringing).
Seems to work so I guess that's a solution for now.

Why don't you just use the headphones for the call?
Think of all the microwave radiation going into your brain when you put the phone to your ear! nerd

Primarily because I don't want to have private phone conversations at my desk. The headphones are not really that portable.
Plus I've never liked phone calls using headphones - never sounds right to me.

I've just upgraded to the S8 from an aging, slow S5. Wish I had done the change sooner! Manage to get EE to do £37.99/month and £50 upfront. Unlimited calls/texts and 15gb data with BT sport for 2 years. I was on a sim only with them, and my S5 was on a contract with EE, they originally wouldn't budge from the standard internet prices until I said, okay, i'll have my PAC code then. Suddenly the offer got better.

One thing that is really bugging me is that on long text messages, rather than displaying the entire text, is shows some of it and then a 'view all' button. I can't find a setting which will just make it display the whole message. I've googled around and there's only one topic I can find on the problem, with no solution. Can anyone help? I can see why they did it, but at least give an option to disable it!

For a bit of contrast, I find the fingerprint reader in not too bad of a position, certainly not a negative point about the phone. The finger print reader on my S5 was worse than useless, so never bothered with it, but I can see why those coming from 'home' button finger print readers are finding a little odd. Or maybe it's because i'm left handed?

I spent an age looking at cases and screen protectors yesterday, eventually settled for the Samsung clear front one, paid extra for special delivery so it would come today as if it didn't, it would be tuesday before I could get it and i'm not too confident leaving a brand new phone naked. Of course the postman came this morning when I had nipped out, signature required, card left, collect from the sorting office next working day. That £6 extra i paid for next day delivery right down the stter. It was my fault though.

Just ordered mine, upgrade from my 2yo 6P that's going to a family member.

Haven't owned a samsung myself since my S2 (that's still in use by my kid), but the current price (esp with the cashback) doesn't make it that much of a premium over the 5T, while this is waterproof, better screen and camera and wireless charging smile.

I have a tech21 cover and screen protector for my old s6. I've dropped the phone several times and it just bounces.

The phone is still like new.

If they do them for the s8 I would thoroughly recommend them.

Ok, had mine for a day now.

First impressions: it's the first time I can remember "upgrading", it didn't really feel like a leap. More like a small incremental upgrade. It's deffo a lot more compact than my 6P while I don't feel I'm losing out on a lot of screen real estate.

Pro:
  • Camera is deffo a lot faster at taking pictures
  • More compact with a lot of screen real estate
  • Waterproof
  • Wireless charging
  • Better reception in poor reception buildings
  • Better DAC for listening to music
  • the screen is just better, and it gets retina-burning bright. Don't need that now but sure will come in handy when I'm outside in the sun.
  • The box was very complete, no skimping out on anything, even got some really good AKG headphones with it. Probably the best I've ever had boxed with a phone.
  • Vibration is a lot better than it was on the 6P
  • At first I wasn't sure about the tall screen, but it's actually brilliant: you still have some space above when a keyboard pops up and you have more space to put two apps on top of each other, ex on this forum and youtube at the same time.
Con:
  • Seriously samsung... for every very good standard android app there apparently is a half baked samsung app (which only target seems to be to get you to create a samsung account). FFS
  • Seem to have a lot of "pocket dialing", the phone doing all sorts of stuff while locked and in my pocket. I can probably turn off the screen stuff but still getting used to the menu's
  • No front stereo speakers
  • Finger print is a lot more flush and a bit off centre. Will probably get used to it but not as easy as on the 6P.
  • What is this Bixbi stuff and how do I destroy it, kill the people that were responsible and rape their wife and burn their children?

Bixby (and its infernal button) and the finger print scanner location is what puts me off this phone. I am definitely more tempted by the offerings from OnePlus, Honor and Huawei tbh.
