Samsung Galaxy S8
Discussion
Dropped mine last week onto a hard tiled floor - luckily no damage, but it made me order a cover (Samsung LED view case). Useless - it shows the time for 5s when you close the cover, then the phone realises it's got a cover on it and switches the Always On display off. Since I don't like covers anyway, I've stopped using it and will simply have to be more careful.
I've noticed today that there is a significant difference in my useage compared to my old phone. I take an 8" tablet to work, which I tend to use at lunchtime. However - I seem to have stopped using it - I now do everything on the phone.
I don't really know why - it wasn't a conscious decision, and although the display is clearly bigger than my old S5 I wouldn't have thought it was significant enough to make a difference especially when compared to an 8" tablet. But for some reason, I now find it preferable to use the phone when I'm at work - guess I'll stop bringing the tablet in. It's definitely a positive sign for the phone though.

I got the s8+ at the weekend. My only issue is the fingerprint scanner but the facial recognition seems faster anyway.
From the online comments I've seen, I think I might be the only S8+ owner who likes the fingerprint scanner! It seems in the natural place for my index finger and works first time 99.9% of the time.downthepub said:
Since the July update, it appears that I've lost about 3-4 hours of battery charge. There's been some mention of this on Reddit; anyone here affected as well?
Mine did lose quite a bit of life but I use the power saving mode (Medium) and it lasts me the full day usually.Only issue is that when in power saving mode my E-mails and FB don't always update so I have to manually refresh.

Nope,I love it where it is, thanks. Just wrap your head around fingerprint = On, rather than power then fingerprint, and it makes perfect sense.davek_964 said:

Reviving the thread a little.
Am in the market for a new phone but not really looking to pay obscene amounts of money for one of sign up to get another 2 year contract.
Has been brought to my attention that you can buy a Galaxy S8 from Amazon in the US for about $575, which at today's rates is approx £450. Will cost more to post to the UK and pay import fees, but thinking of picking one up locally while on a trip there.
Anyone know of any issues that are likely to be experienced buying a US phone? Have looked to see if all of the network bands are the same but cannot find anything conclusive.

I think you'd really struggle to find a modern phone that doesn't support bands used in Europe and America etc. - especially a high end one like the S8.
This link suggests you would have no problem : https://www.frequencycheck.com/models/AabYB/samsun...
Obviously you would need to make sure the phone wasn't locked. It's also possible that the pre-installed stuff might differ per country.

Not happy.
I was using my phone this morning, while sitting down - and somehow managed to drop it while talking. It should have been fine since it was only dropped from about 2ft - but apparently landed on a metal edge of an almost flat round metal disc (a foot of an office screen divider) - and it was the edge of the phone (next to the volume key) that caught the metal edge.
It feels like the screen is actually chipped just above the volume key, and is obviously smashed badly in that area - and a crack runs all the way down the screen to the bottom corner diagonally opposite the volume key. And it looks like it's probably damaged the front and rear glass. Not great on a phone which is barely 2 months old.
The only positive is that if I'd realised the Note 8 was being released so soon, I wouldn't have bought the S8+, The repair is unlikely to be cheap given that front and back would need replacing, so think I'm going to cut my losses. I've pre-ordered a Note 8 which should be delivered in just over a week. Once I've got it, I'll sell the S8+ as a damaged phone.

Thanks - I do actually have a cover, but don't like using them and hence didn't have it on.I'm being told by the repair shops that the screen alone is a £250 part. I've been quoted £320, £300 and £265 in 3 different shops for the repair.
I can't live with the crack, since I feel my finger catching on it when typing (swipe). So I need to decide whether to pay for a new screen - which is about 1/3 of what I paid for the phone - or simply cut my losses and replace it.

It's the only phone I've ever had in a case in all my years going back to my brick, it's like a bar of soap.
I have a cover on it just for the extra grip. The cynical part of me thinks the manufacturers make phones deliberately slippery so they can charge you for replacement screens... Gassing Station | Computers, Gadgets & Stuff | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
