The camera on the Galaxy S7 is very good indeed and the standard camera software gets nice results with it. That's the clincher for me, I love taking photographs of scenery, cars etc when I'm out and about or travelling but I rarely carry a DSLR or other dedicated camera hardware unless I've gone out specifically with photography in mind. But also the screens are generally of really good quality, the battery life seems pretty decent, and they seem to last pretty well (cracked screens aside) compared to other smartphones I've owned recently. I handed down my overhauled S5 to a friend recently, it's three years old but still performs near enough to how it did when new.

The Touchwiz UI isn't great but it's better on the S7 than it was on the S5 and pretty decent once you've gone into the settings and tweaked to taste. And if you find it very annoying there's other UIs you can replace it with.

Nothing ground-breaking but I guess that's not a huge surprise. A nice device but no reason to upgrade, I fear.

Really? I find the camera on my S7 Edge crap. I'm sure it never used to be but at some point it started over processing photos and making them look piss poor.

I've had my S7e since launch pretty much and I can't fault it. I'm not sure what they can add to make me want to upgrade so I'll more than likely stay as I am.
Just as I thought, I'll be staying as I am.

Not really clued up on phones/ tech/ computers etc - just appreciate gadgets which work.

I had a Samsung Galaxy S2 around 2011 and loved it. It had a built in FM radio tuner which was useful.

Then in 2014 I upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S4, which I continue to use........but frustratingly, it does not have the built in FM radio tuner.

QUESTION.......which top-end Samsung smartphones have this FM radio tuner?

The last Samsung with FM was the S3 http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communicat...

Best option now is probably a radio app over data for the FM and DAB stations.

Without looking to closely (as I'm really not that interested as I'm a Nexus fan) it looks to me like the S8 is a step up from the S7 but not really a step up from the S7 Edge?

I fear Samsung are trying to sell this based on the "Software" update between 7 & 8 just like Google tried to push the Pixel XL over Nexus 6P and then a few months later released the majority of the new software (Android Assistant) anyway.

Fried of mine is looking to replace his S6 edge with S8 which will be an upgrade but told the missus not to bother from her S7 Edge.

The rate of progress with smartphones has slowed to the point that there is virtually no point in upgrading every year, even every two years doesn't give much of a leap - I've got an S7e but in all honesty my old S5 would still be perfectly ok. My contract is up again next year and although I get a 20% discount with vodafone I'm considering buying something and going to a sim free contract if its cheaper. Maybe a Huawei P-whatever...

On another note, I have access to an iphone running the latest version of iOS, christ its like steeping back in to the stone age. I don't think I'll ever understand the appeal..

  1. I don't mind the extra height in the screen, but why not make a phone just less high and keep 16:9?
This is exactly what I thought when I saw the LG G6 and now this S8, I have small-ish hands and while I can just about manage the side to side stretch with a 5.5" screen there's no way I'll be able to get anywhere near the top or bottom of these screens without using two hands. Add to that the amount of content out there that's optimised for 16:9 screens and I just wonder what the point is?

Unless they need the physical space for all the various bits and pieces maybe?

Bet the s8 plus with its 6.2in display is lovely. Not very practical at that size though. Where will the constant rise in phone display sizes stop?

Think I'll stick with my Note 5 and wait and see if they release 'a refurbished' Note 7 (as they've suggested they might).

No problem with large screens. I have a Note 4, slightly smaller screen, but I haven't seen another phone with a better quality screen. Photos are superb.

Thanks. Listening to the radio over the internet with Wi-Fi or SIM signal does not appeal to me.

How hard can it be for Samsung to incorporate an FM tuner into their recent smartphones?

Nobody wants a FM tuner these days though. Everybody wants streaming and DAB.

I want an FM tuner, really miss it on my S7. I quite like having a home button too. See nothing here to make want to upgrade.

Anyone tried one of these pay monthly deals with the manufacturer, with a Sim only deal from a network?

Samsung are offering £33/month for the S8+, can get 20gb data with O2 for £25, so pretty much same price as going though a network for it all, but Samsung are offering yearly upgrade program.

Think Apple do it for iPhones too..

So, going off topic a tad, if one doesn't want a big phone, but wants a high spec device and android the answer is Pixel.

Right?
