You might be better getting an unlock code off eBay and going for 3-2-1 on the 3 network
Would that let me top up as and when needed ? I've seen the tariff is much cheaper than Vodafone but if it only lasts 30 days then it's no good for me.

With hindsight I should have researched smartphones far more before buying one!

Three PAYG (3p-2p-1p) credit doesn't expire, presuming you make a call or send a text every six months. So it's ideal for light users. You can top up on-line or buy a voucher from a supermarket etc. No need for monthly top-up credit which expires if you don't use it . Needs a 3G capable phone.

Free sim here: https://www.three.co.uk/Support/Free_SIM/Order?id=...

As to smartphones and battery life, most can run for days if you can find stuff like 'turn background data off, or disable the mobile data settings and limit background apps and BlueTooth from running. Takes some futzing to kill Google background data slurping on Android though but it can be done. There's an app called NetGuard which blocks almost everything from exiting.

I can't recommend Windows phones due to 'app-gap' and continued ability of Microsoft to break your stuff with 'upgrades' but I have a recent Lumia 650 (Windows 10) on Three PAYG. Battery lasts for four or five days, when used as a 'phone' or for texts, annual phone/text usage on Three 3-2-1 is less than £70. So far, it works very well for me with light usage.

Good offline nav with 'Maps', camera is excellent for use as a 'photocopier.' Don't use it for browsing but do check email on it when away.

No WhatsApp, FaceBook, Twitter or other social annoyances, though. :-)

1. If you need to actually get anything done on a computer, a tablet isn't going to help as firstly it's a tiny screen so you can't see st and secondly you can't type fast and accurately on a touch screen like you can on a proper keyboard. They're fine for occasional web browsing but I wouldn't want to work on one.
Yep, but apparently there's loads of people that actually don't need to get anything done on a computer.
I ditched my MacBook Pro for a 9" iPad Pro with keyboard a month ago and haven't looked back. I can edit my photos and 4K video on it as well as the usual browsing etc. Bloody brilliant thing. Just took me a little while to adapt to not having a mouse or trackpad by the keyboard.

Today I went to the Vodafone shop in town ( opposite the Three shop as it happens ) and asked the assistant there about how to use the top up voucher and not wanting it on a 30 day bundle.
Asst. said that I had to go for the £10/30 day bundle for the first top-up, then after that I could do the top up as and when needed option.
