Garmin Fenix 5 - anyone got one?
Discussion
Just found this thread. Spent a lot of time last December trying to decide which Garmn to get, came very close to the Fenix 5 but in the end I plumped for the FR935 (as already said a Fenix5 in a smaller plastic case). For me this was the perfect result, big watches look stupid on me, my brother has a Fenix 3 HR which I never really liked the look of anyway and looked ridiculous on me.
I actually got the 935 Tri bundle, even though I only really run (with the odd swim). I got a decent deal on it and I liked the green strap and the chest HRM is pretty good.
I have to say it is one of the best bits of tech I have ever bought and I have no regrets. All my other watches just sit in a drawer now. Battery life is still 10 days to 2 weeks. I use a screen protector which has saved it a couple of times. Only real niggle is the HRM on the back is cracked. It seems this is a relatively common fault on Garmin watches, posibly exacerbated by sweat and or sun lotion. I must admit I am pretty annoyed by it but haven't done anything as it still works fine and I don't want to lose it while it's replaced (by a refurb that will probably do the same). My brother's F3 HR did the same but his still works too so hopefully it won't stop it working...
BTW I am using a really nice watch face called EuroPilotPlus - nice analogue face that is really configurable with as many complications as you can shake a stick at!

I had a 5X and sold it for an Apple Watch...now looking at a 6X...man I wish there was a middle ground!
Fenix - Looks badass, tracks EVERY running metric, battery forever, easy to use when running
Apple - So simple to play podcast/music, can take and make calls while out, no need to lug the actual phone around........but the battery dies during an Ultra run, the interface is sloppy (trying to swipe to stop a run in the wet with gloves on etc) and it looks like I'm an Apple geek.
Right now I'm looking at a 6X for running and on my wrist with the Apple watch for music and calls sat in my shorts pocket/camel bak (other wrist???)

As a tier 1 operator who operates I need this.
Not sure why I’d be reading texts from Hannah while halo jumping but

It’s seriously niche. It will prolong your battery life while you are away from the mains/battery pack, but you still need to charge it. DC Rainmaker view IIRC is it isn’t worth the premium. I bought the 6X sapphire as an upgrade to my 5X. Very happy with it, for silly things like the better widget view and larger screen, which lets you have 6 data screens and some graphics. It also sits a bit flatter on the wrist, so better under a shirt. It was very much a want purchase than a need purchase though. Well as I’ve had tome on my hands for a change and inspired by posts on here I’ve been playing.
I never knew the weather was on there I’ve added a few apps like tides which will be awesomely useful and a map application and something for another hobby.
Anybody recommend some downloads?

Bought a 6S at the start of November - quite an upgrade from a Vivoactive 3, makes the VA3 seem like a toy. Didn’t want something too comedy big.
Must look at the downloads.... only downloaded the hydration app so far!
Never had an issue with Garmin Pay. I use Starling bank and had no issues using it since July when I first started using Garmin Pay.

How are people getting on with their Fenix 5's? Mine seems to have developed a battery-drain problem.
- Its the 5X Plus (so the massive battery)
- I never have it connected by Bluetooth to my phone (switched off in the settings)
- Its always been set to "auto-upload" in the wifi settings, so that it uploads when I walk in from a run, but the battery drain issue seems recent.
Yesterday evening (7pm) I charged it to 100%, and this morning at 10am im down to 93%, with it just having sat on my desk the whole time. Last use of the watch was a run on Wednesday, using GPS (obviously) and listening to music.
Last week I charged it up to 100%, then immediately switched it off, then back on again, and after a whole day sat stationary I think it had only lost ~2 or 3%, which is the kind of usage I would expect.
It makes me wonder: once ive completed an activity, does the GPS stay "on"? When I pause the music, and disconnect my Bluetooth headphones, is the watch constantly searching for headphones to reconnect to? When it uploads on returning home, does it stay linked to the Wifi constantly (I would assume it knows when it has an activity that it hasn't yet synced, so only attempts to connect then).
Im going to retry the "charge to 100% and restart watch" method to check im not imagining it, but has anyone else experienced similar?
