Wondering if anyone can give me any guidance.

PC very slow after windows update. Particularly on startup.

Running task manager I can see under Performance that Disk 0 (csmile is at either 99 or 100%
Guessing thats a problem.

C: properties shows 385GB used of 465Gb capacity.

Hoping to replace PC in next 3 to 4 months anyway but much I can do in the meantime?

Thanks

Hi,

Woke computer from 'sleep' this morning and disk use is right down again, mostly under 10%.

Will do a restart and see how the performance is.

Thanks

okay. After restart. Still somewhat slow.

1st thing i opened was Task manager and just got a blank box with not responding for a few moments.
Just after it loading

Then i opened Chrome, again a white screen for a few moments

Dropbox seems to be taking a bit up. Now a few min after starting disk is back to 6-10%
Antimalware and the Superfetch thing seem to be taking a bit too.
Only other thing I noticed odd was that a few say 32bit when I'm running 64 bit. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Only extra change I made last night was going into the MSConfig and changing start processors from 1 to 4. Not sure if that was a good idea but thought I'd give it a try.

I had a similar issue, after doing the W10 anniversary update:
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

In short, re-installing (or installing for the first time, if you are allowing Windows to use its own drivers) the latest drivers for your motherboard for the SATA controller might be a good idea.

I'm thinking there might be a RAM issue.

It shows as 8GB as in the above photos but constantly getting memory low issues and unable to run more than 3 tabs in chrome. the task manager shows 2.5-3GB being used so should be plenty spare.

Edit - Have run the Windows memory Diagnostic and it come back clear, no issues.

'The Windows Memory Diagnostic tested the computer's memory and detected no errors'

You might have a handle leak

What is using all the handles (and how many) ?

Done a search but can't quite work out how to check handles from the Task Manager.
Can you advise? I'm on Windows 10.

Currently with this page and Task manager running
CPU 11%
memory 37%

It's not handles then, what is the memory Paged Pool / Non paged pool ?

Start performance monitor

Add these counters:

Memory-->Pool Nonpaged Bytes

Memory-->Pool Paged Bytes

Paging File-->% Usage

Change the update time to 600 seconds

Thanks

Paged Pool 447MB
non paged 133MB

Update speed I have options of Pause/Low/Med/High - I've changed to High

Not sure how to add counters to performance page??

Those screenshots are pointing to Dropbox doing something funky. Are you uploaded a whole load of stuff at the moment?

Either way - pause Dropbox and see if it all returns to normal. If so then voila, you have your culprit.

Thanks will give it a try. Have paused then excited using the little up arrow apps box on the RH side of the taskbar.
Have also gone to Task Manager / Startup and changed status to Disabled for Dropbox and Dropbox update.

Killing Dropbox seems to have made a big improvement. I can certainly live with it live this for a few more months. Hopefully I won't have any more problems.

Thanks

Hi Op,

I had exactly this on about 3 machines in the office. It turned out to be the windows improvement background program causing it and using 100% disk. It was an easy fix. Go to settings, privacy, feedback (it's at the bottom somewhere) then turn feedback frequency to never and diagnostic to basic. It worked on all three of them.

Have a look

Pete

You'll probably find that if you reinstall the Dropbox application it will start behaving itself again.

I had this problem when my old laptop updated with Aniversary. Disk paging all the time, so I bought more memory. No difference. I searched on line and found a fix, sorry I cannot remember the site but it was something like Tomsanswers.

Once I had fixed that the CPU was running at 100%. There was a fix for that as well and it sort of ran OK, but SKYGO would no longer work. I reinstalled Silverlight, but made no difference.

I gave in, bought a new laptop and have discovered a whole new can of worms with Creators update. A Microsoft senior technician is calling me tomorrow night. 3-chats with low grades have achieved nothing.

I now wish I had just bought a Mac. I am no longer convinced that Microsoft is fit for purpose.

I had issues on my work pc this morning with windows updates causing disk use spike to 100% and it not being useable, i am wondering if there may be issues on old mech drives as not had this on my laptop or desktop both of which are SSD but it does seem like there may be an underlying fault

GRR,

Similar problems again!

Last couple eo times I've woken the PC up from sleep I've instantly had a 'Your computer is low on memory' message. My background has reverted to black and I struggle to use Chrome with regular shutdowns.

There was a massive Disk load initially at 100%, System using the most. Memory shows as 25%

I have no idea what can be doing this. All the stuff in the processes/handles area seems to be required stuff, nothing I wouldn't shutdown without advice.

What were the value of Paged pool and non page pool when you had error message?

How is your swap file setup ?
